Description
Brief description: Method for repairing damage to an insulated body of a vehicle and repaired vehicle.
The invention relates to a method for repairing damage to an insulated superstructure of a vehicle, wherein the superstructure is provided with a sandwich structure comprising an inner wall, a layer of insulating material and an outer wall.
Such vehicles are, for example, motorhomes, caravans, horse trucks, service vehicles or refrigerated trucks. Damage to the structure of such vehicles is difficult to repair because of the sandwich structure. Small damages, such as dents in the outer wall, are filled with a filler, whereby any profile present is copied in the outer wall. Such a method is known from Dutch patent application NL1002117. Damages in which, for example, cracks have formed in the outer wall cannot be repaired in this way. It is generally known that such damage is repaired by replacing the entire outer wall on the side with the damage. This is a very extensive and expensive repair.
The invention contemplates a damage in which the outer wall is torn yet to be repaired locally without having to replace an entire outer wall. According to the invention, these disadvantages are eliminated and this method is characterized in that a part of the outer wall, in which the damage is present, is removed by making a hole in the outer wall well in size of the damage and including the damage, the edges of the hole can be strengthened by providing it with a recess part with a surface parallel to the outer wall, the part of the insulation material, substantially the size of the hole, if necessary, is repaired and a repair piece is glued to that part of the insulation material and the recess part, so that the repair piece lies in one plane with the outer wall, after which the outer wall is possibly finished with a filler.
The outer wall and the repair piece preferably comprise the same material. The outer wall of such a sandwich structure can be made of various materials such as polyester or an epoxy resin. The outer wall and the repair piece preferably comprise aluminum. Aluminum outer walls with a very small thickness of approximately 0.7 mm are often used in sandwich structures. Damage and in particular cracks in such a thin outer wall cannot be repaired by conventional methods. The method according to the invention is eminently suitable for repairing such outer walls.
Although the edges of the hole can be reinforced in different ways, the edges of the hole are preferably provided with a recess part by gluing a flat strip on the back of the outer wall, between the outer wall and the insulating material, which strip over an edge of the hole. Such a strip gives stiffness to the edges and the protruding part of the strip at the same time forms the recess part to which the repair piece is glued.
The outer wall is usually made of a relatively thin material. Generally thinner than 1 mm. The flat strip gives firmness to the edges. To that end, the flat strip is preferably stiffer than the outer wall. This can be done by making the strip thicker than the outer wall or by manufacturing the strip from another stiffer material, for example stainless steel for the strip with an aluminum-containing outer wall. The strip can also be converted so that the converted part of the strip gives extra form rigidity to the strip. The strip is connected with glue to the outer wall and to the repair piece. The glue connection is stronger when the strip is provided with a roughened surface. This can be done, for example, by roughing up the strip by sanding, for example with grain 80. The strip can also be roughened by making holes in the strip. The rear side of the outer wall is preferably cleaned before the strip is glued to the rear side. In known practice, the outer wall of a sandwich structure is often glued to the layer of insulating material. If the backside should not be cleaned, the glue does not adhere well and the strip becomes loose or is applied crookedly.
The use of a strip gives advantages in particular when the damage is in the flat parts of the outer wall. In the case of an easily convertible outer wall, for example made of aluminum, the method can also be advantageously applied by providing the edges of the hole with a recess by forming the outer wall at the edges of the hole. The transformed edge of the hole then provides reinforcement and also forms the floor part. The reinforcement then depends on the geometry of the transformed edge and the material of the outer wall. This specific method can also be used to advantage with curved surfaces such as at corners of the superstructure. There the turned edge can follow the curvature of the corner. That is less easy with a strip.
The repair part is preferably pressed onto the floor part by fixing clamps with removable glue on the outer wall outside the hole, arranging a bridge part over the repair part between the clamps and pressing the repair part via the bridge part onto the floor part so that it repair piece is in one plane with the outer wall. In this way the repair piece can be pressed unilaterally from the outside and brought into one plane with the outer wall.

Figure 1 illustrates a method for repairing damage 1 to an insulated superstructure 2 of a vehicle, wherein the superstructure is provided with a sandwich structure 3, comprising an inner wall 4, a layer of insulating material 5 and an outer wall 6. Such vehicles are, for example, motorhomes, caravans, horse trucks, service vehicles or refrigerated trucks. Damage 1 to the structure of such vehicles is difficult to repair because of the sandwich structure 3. Small damages, such as dents in the outer wall, are filled with a filler, whereby any profile present is copied in the outer wall. Damage 1 in which, for example, cracks have formed in the outer wall 6, cannot be repaired in this way. It is generally known that such damage is repaired by replacing the entire outer wall 6 on the side with the damage 1. This is a very extensive and expensive repair. The invention contemplates a damage in which the outer wall 6 is torn yet to be repaired locally without replacing an entire outer wall 6.
Figure 2 shows how according to the invention a part of the outer wall 6, in which the damage was present, has been removed by providing a hole 7 in the outer wall 6 well the size of the damage and including the damage, including the edges 8 of the hole can be reinforced by providing it with a recess part 9 with a surface parallel to the outer wall 6, the part of the insulation material 10, substantially the size of the hole, has been repaired.
Figure 3 shows how a repair piece 11 is glued to that part of the insulation material 10 and the recess part 9, so that the repair piece 11 lies in one plane with the outer wall 6, whereafter the outer wall is possibly finished with a filler.
For the adhesives and filler, standard products and standard processing methods are used, which are matched to the materials used for the outer wall 6 and the repair piece 11. The outer walls of such insulated structures can be made of different materials such as plastics or metals such as aluminum . Because it is a superstructure 2 for a vehicle, light constructions are used as possible. The outer wall 6 with such a sandwich structure 3 can consist of different materials such as a plastic, in particular polyester, polyethylene or an epoxy resin. Wood is also used. Thin outer walls are used in practice, often thinner than 1 mm. Many outer walls 6 are made from aluminum plates. The outer wall 6 and the repair piece 11 preferably comprise substantially the same material. This has advantages with, for example, expansion with heating in the sun and with aging behavior. Aluminum outer walls 6 with a very small thickness of approximately 0.7 mm are often used in sandwich structures. Damage 1 and in particular cracks in such a thin outer wall 6 cannot be repaired by conventional methods. Certainly if the outer wall 6 is torn then the entire outer wall 6 on one side of the superstructure 2 is replaced. The method according to the invention is eminently suitable for repairing such thin outer walls 6. The layer of insulation material often comprises plastics such as polyurethane or polystyrene (Styropor or Styrofoam). This layer is relatively easy to repair also because the layer is somewhat compressible and easy to process. The inner walls are often made of a metal such as aluminum or wood (plywood).
Figures 2, 3 and 4 show how the edges 8 of the hole 7 are preferably provided with a recess part 9 by gluing a flat strip 13 on the rear side 12 of the outer wall 6, between the outer wall 6 and the insulating material 5.10, which protrudes over an edge 8 of the hole 7. Such a strip 13 gives rigidity to the edges 8, wherein the protruding part 9 of the strip simultaneously forms the recess part 9 to which the repair piece 11 is glued.
The flat strip 13 provides rigidity to the edges 8 of the relatively thin outer wall 6. To that end, the flat strip 13 is preferably made stiffer than the outer wall 6. This can be done by making the strip 13 thicker than the outer wall 6 or by choosing another material such as steel or stainless steel on an aluminum outer wall 6.
Figure 4 shows that the strip 13 can also be converted so that the converted part 14 of the strip 13 gives extra form rigidity to the strip 13. The strip 13 is bonded with glue to the outer wall 6 and to the repair piece 11. The glue connection is stronger when the strip 13 is provided with a roughened surface on the glue side. This can be done, for example, by roughing up the strip by sanding, for example with grain 80. The strip can also be roughened by providing holes 15 in the strip. The rear side 12 of the outer wall 6 is preferably cleaned before the strip 13 is glued to the rear side 12. In known practice, the outer wall of a sandwich structure is often glued to the layer of insulating material. If the back is not cleaned then the glue does not adhere well. If that also happened with the method according to the invention, the strip 13 becomes loose or is skewed. Standard mechanical and chemical cleaning methods are used for cleaning the rear.
The flat strip 13 can be glued to the rear side 12 of the outer wall 6 with a standard clamp, since the strip 13 and outer wall 6 are easily accessible.
The hole 7 is preferably rectangular. This has the advantage that standard straight strips 13 can be used. The strips 13 are then brought to the desired length. It is also possible to use the method for, for example, other hole shapes such as circles. The strips 13 are then less easy to make standard. The use of a strip 13 gives advantages in particular when the damage is in the flat parts of the outer wall 6 and the shape of the hole 7 can be freely chosen.
Figure 5 shows how with a relatively easily deformable outer wall 6 of aluminum, the method can also be applied with advantage by providing the edges 8 of the hole 7 with a recess part 9 by turning the outer wall on the edges 8 of the hole 7. to shape. The outer wall 6 is then transformed. The transformed edge 8 of the hole then provides a reinforcement and also forms the recess part 9. The reinforcement then depends on the geometry of the transformed edge and the material of the outer wall 6. However, this specific method can also be advantageously applied to curved surfaces such as at corners of the superstructure 2. There, the transformed edge 8 can follow the curvature of the corner. The shape of the hole 7, for example of a round shape, can also be easily adjusted with this method. This is less easy with a method in which a strip 13 is used.
Figures 6 and 7 show how the repair piece 11 is pressed onto the recess part 9 by fixing clamps 16 with removable glue 17 on the outer wall 6 outside the hole 7, placing a bridge part 18 over the repair piece 11 between the clamps 16 and pressing the repair part 11 on the recess part 9 via the bridge part 18, so that the repair part 11 lies in one plane with the outer wall 6. The pressing takes place with pressure bodies 19, which exert force on the repair piece 11 via a screw spindle 20. The pressure bodies 19 can be made of a plastic or metal. The bodies 19 are arranged in such a way that they lie on the outer wall 6 as well as on the repair piece 11. A flat underside of the bodies 19 then ensures that the repair piece 11 and the outer wall 6 lie in one plane. In this way, the repair piece 11 can be pressed unilaterally from the outside and brought into one plane with the outer wall 6. Of course, depending on the size of the damage 1 and the repair piece 11, several bridges can be used. The bridges 18 can also be used at different heights and can thus be used crosswise.
The method can also be used to reinforce parts of the hole 7, for example when an edge 8 of the hole 7 is formed by a part such as a door, window or access hatch. Along the edges of the hole 7 where that part is located, then the standard reinforcement or finish of that part is used while the method of the invention is applied for the rest of the hole 7.
The invention further relates to the vehicles which are provided with a superstructure that has been repaired by applying a method according to the invention.
