Abstract

The invention relates to a lifting device for a set of independently suspended wheels of a semi-trailer wherein the wheels each are suspended at opposite sides of a central beam of the chassis of the semi-trailer by one or more link arms. The lifting device comprises a brace construction that, connected to a central part of the chassis, is movable in an essentially vertical direction, and comprises two lifting arms that extend from a central part in mutually opposite directions. The free end of each of the lifting arms is positioned under one of the link arms such, that in a lifting position, each lift arm supports the respective link arm such that the wheels connected are kept in a compressed condition of the suspension.

Description

Lifting device for an independent suspended wheel set of a semi-trailer
The invention relates to a lifting device for a set of independently suspended wheels of a semi-trailer wherein the wheels each are suspended at opposite sides of a central beam of the chassis of the semi-trailer by one or more link arms .
Lifting devices for axles or semi-trailers with two or more axles have been known. They serve to lift an axle of a semi-trailer such that the wheels during riding over a normal road are no longer touching the road and thus are stationary and also do not contribute to carrying part of the load of the semi-trailer. These lifting devices are used for two purposes when the conditions are such that the carrying capacity of the axle is not absolutely required for a proper operation of the semi-trailer. When the lifting device is activated this reduces the rolling friction of the semi-trailer and thus can save fuel. Another factor which may be created on purpose is that lifting of an axle changes the load distribution and it may be used to for instance increase the load on the fifth wheel and thus shift load from the rear to the front of the semi-trailer and transfer it to the truck if this is desirable.
With the introduction of independent wheel suspension also for semi-trailers, even though semi-trailers are then still spoken of as having two or more axles, in fact physical axles connecting wheel sets on opposite sides of the semitrailer no longer exist even though obviously the wheels where placed symmetrical to the longitudinal centre line of the semi-trailer and thus still creating from the outside the visual impression of imaginary wheel axles. The introduction of independent wheel suspension makes the construction of lifting devices more complex since no longer a shaft needs to be lifted but in fact wheels on both sides of the trailer have to be lifted making the lifting devices more complicated. In addition independent wheel suspensions are more complex and thus occupy more of the available space between the loading floor and the wheel centres leaving less space for a lifting device. Such space is maybe not at a premium forward of the most for ward axle of the semi-trailer but even then the lifting device tends to be complicated because of the need to lift the wheels on both sides.
There is a need for a lifting device for wheel sets of trailers where the wheels are independently suspended on semi-trailers wherein the lifting device has a simple construction and is not requiring a lot of valuable space under the loading floor and between the wheels.
These requirements are fulfilled by a lifting the device according to claim 1. A brace construction with only two lifting arms occupies very little space in the precious region between wheels and central chassis member but still is capable of lifting all the wheels belonging to an imaginary axle and maintain that lifted position through the fixation means of the brace to the lifted position.
Quite often the chassis of a semi-trailer comprises a central beam that has no free space between the top side and the loading floor of the semi-trailer and thus it is particularly advantageous if the central part of the brace of the lifting device is positioned below the central chassis member.
For a simple operation it is advantageous if the lifting device comprises means to power the vertical movement of the brace relative to the central chassis beam. These power means are then used to simply bring the brace to its lifting position overcoming the weight of the wheels and link arms as well as the suspension force.
In an advantageous embodiment the lifting device according to the invention comprises lifting arms that at the free end have a surface layer of a wear resistant respectively low friction surface. This can be quite advantageous because the lifting motion will cause sliding movement between the lifting arms and the link arms of the suspension. This may very well involve high contact forces so that a low friction surface or a wear resistant surface are advantageous in reducing wear and possibly also reducing friction of forces.
In a particular advantageous embodiment the lifting device according to the invention comprises a support plate that is mounted to the central chassis part, e.g. a central chassis beam in such a way that the support plate is support- ing the central part of the brace while between the support plate and the central part of the brace a jack is provided.
The jack can be of any suitable kind, such as a hydraulic jack, a pneumatic jack or an electromechanically operated jack.
In particular for semi-trailers that have an independent wheel suspension based on air suspension, a preferred embodiment of the lifting device according to the invention comprises a pneumatic jack that is embodied as an air spring.
Normally a semi-trailer is supplied with electrical energy as well as with hydraulic and pneumatic energy. Therefore it is preferred to use one of these types of energies already available to power the jack of the lifting device according to the invention to lift and lower the central part of the brace and thus the suspension of the imaginary axle.
The advantages of the lifting device according to the invention will be illustrated by describing a non-limiting example of a lifting device according to the invention referring to the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a cross section of a first embodiment of a lifting device according to the invention in an extended condition of the suspension;
Figure 2 shows the lifting device of figure 1 in a compressed condition of the suspension; and
Figure 3 shows the lifting device of figures 1 and 2, seen from below. A lifting device for a wheel set of an imaginary axle of a semi-trailer as shown in cross section in figures 1 and 2 and in a view from below in figure 3. The wheel set comprises wheels 1, in this example two wheels 1 at each side, that are suspended to a central beam 2 of the chassis of the semitrailer by link arms 3. For each side there are two link arms 3 essentially one above the other at a certain distance spaced apart. The link arms 3 have essentially a triangular form as can be seen in figure 3. The connections to the link arms are pivoting connections in all three angular points. The upper link arm is connected at two of its angular points to the side of central beam 2 and lower link arm 3 is connected at two points at the bottom of the central beam 2. At the third angu- lar point, which is closest to the wheels carried by the link arm, the two link arms are connected to an essentially vertical stud to which the hub carrying the wheel or wheels is connected. The lower link arms 3 are comprising a rib 7 connecting the two legs of the triangular link arm that run from the wheel side towards the central beam 2. Notably in figures 1 and 2 a brace is clearly visible, the brace comprising a central part 4 and at each of two opposing sides of the central part 4 a lifting arm 5 is attached, facing a pair of wheels 1. The lifting arms 5 are also clearly visible in figure 3. The brace 4, 5 and notably the lifting arms 5 are positioned and dimensioned such that the horizontal free end of each of the lifting arms 5 is positioned under a rib 7 of a corresponding lower link arm 3 Further in all figures a support plate 8 can be seen that at a predefined distance thereof has been attached to the bottom side of the central beam 2 and essentially in parallel to the central beam 2. Brace 4, 5 is supported by a jack 6 that is placed between the central part 4 of the brace 4, 5 and the support plate 8. In this embodiment of the lifting device according to the invention the jack 6 is in the form of an air spring that is embodied in the form of an air bellow. In figure 1 the air bellow is in a relatively deflated shape and figure 2 shows a position where the air bellow has been inflated and thus is lifting the brace 4, 5 so that lift arms 5 are lifting ribs 7 of the lower link arms at both sides, and thus lift the suspension of the wheels on both sides of the central chassis beam 2 to a compressed position of the suspension and thus lifting all wheels belonging to the set both on the left and on the right of the semi-trailer to a position where they are no longer touching the ground and therefore are no longer sharing the load of the semi-trailer. Since the point of lifting the suspension, being approximately the middle of rib 7, is relatively close to the stationary points of the link arm, the stroke of brace 4,5 to lift the suspension to a certain height is clearly smaller than the stroke that the wheels travel in the lifting process. Due to this and to the fact that with one symmetrical device the independent suspensions on both sides are lifted together, the lifting device according to the invention can thus be kept to rather modest overall dimensions.
The semi-trailer here is as can be seen in all three figures is of the type where the independent wheel suspension is an independent suspension equipped with air springs. This is a particular favourable embodiment because that means that the jack of the lifting device in principal only has to carry the weight of the wheels, suspension and the brace of the lifting device because when the imaginary axle has to be lifted the air pressure in the air springs can be reduced so that the jack does not have to work against the air springs to compress them.
