Description

Pile cleaning system Background 5 The present invention relates to a marine growth removal system for cleaning an erected open ended pile prior to coupling the pile, by using grout, to a construction to be founded, like a windmill.
In case of installing a wind turbine, a delay of more than a few days between mono pile installation and grouting operations is not uncommon. The grouting 10 operation has for its purpose to firmly couple the mono pile and the windmill possibly with a so called transition piece. This delay between mono pile installation and grouting operations can be costly as marine growth and other surface debris can often quickly appear on the mono pile surface. The surface cleanliness of the pile is critical for effective grouting and therefore all loose debris and marine growth needs to be 15 removed quickly and effectively to prevent a poor coupling or any costly grout removal operation.
US2010180915 A1 relates to cleaning of subsea pipes in general. The invention described therein is directed to a skid for cleaning subsea conduits, such as strakes and fairings, and a method of cleaning subsea conduits. This invention may be utilized for 20 the removal of marine growth from subsea conduits. The disclosed skid and method of cleaning subsea conduits leaves room for improvements.
Summary of the invention 25 The invention aims to provide a marine growth removal system for cleaning an erected open ended pile which marine growth removal system is more easy to handle and provides a faster cleaning of the pile surface.
Another object of the invention is to improve a marine growth removal system in that a problem associated with that system is at least partly solved.
30 Yet another object of the invention is to provide an alternative marine growth removal system.
According to a first aspect of the invention this is realized with a marine growth removal system for cleaning an erected open ended pile the system comprising; 2 - an elongate inner frame member for extending in a pile interior, - an elongate outer frame member for extending along a pile exterior, wherein the outer frame member is coupled with the inner frame member and wherein the inner frame member and outer frame member are arranged with respect to each 5 other such that a pile wall section accommodation space extends between the inner frame member and the outer frame member, - a guiding device comprising a guiding means arranged with respect to the pile wall section accommodation space for contacting an upper rim of the pile for providing support and guidance to the marine growth removal system, 10 - a cleaning device provided with the inner frame member and/or the outer frame member for removing the marine growth from the interior surface and/or the exterior surface of the pile.
The outer frame member being coupled with the inner frame member and mutually arranged such that a pile wall section accommodation space extends between the inner 15 frame member and the outer frame member enable a more lightweight and smaller marine growth removal system which is importantly more easy to handle. The more easy handling is also caused by the ability to simply suspend the marine growth removal system over the rim of the pile. In addition, the pile is cleaned faster because the height required for a grout coupling is cleaned at once in one rotation of the marine 20 growth removal system.
Such an erected open ended pile is for example a jacket or a foundation pile ready to support a windmill. These piles typically have a large diameter like from 2,5 meter even up to 11 meter. Such a pile must be cleaned prior to coupling the pile, by using 25 grout, to a construction to be founded, like a windmill.
In an embodiment, the marine growth removal system comprises a main frame coupled with the inner frame member and outer frame member, wherein the main frame extends across the inner frame member, the outer frame member and the pile 30 wall section accommodation space there between. In other words, the main frame at least bridges the gap required for the wall section accommodation space.
3
In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the outer frame member and the inner frame member are moveably coupled with respect to each other and the marine growth removal system comprises; - a clamping system coupled with the inner frame member and outer frame 5 member for moving the inner frame member and outer frame member with respect to each other between a pile wall section clamping position wherein a pile wall section which is placed in the pile wall section accommodation space is coupled with the marine growth removal system in a clamping manner, and a pile wall section releasing position wherein the marine growth removal system 10 can be placed on and removed from a pile wall section.
The clamping system and the outer frame member and the inner frame member being moveably coupled enables to couple the marine growth removal system with the pile in a clamping manner which here means that the pile provides guidance to the marine growth removal system during rotation of the marine growth removal system along the 15 circumference of the pile.
In an embodiment, the marine growth removal system comprises a driving system which in use is in contact with the pile wall section for moving the marine growth removal system around the circumference of the pile. In other words, the driving 20 system pushes off against the pile to move the marine growth removal system along the circumference of the pile.
In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the pile wall section accommodation space in use extends over an arc of a circle between from about 5° to 25 about 90°, specifically from about 10° to about 45°.
In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the inner frame member and/or outer frame member in use extend along the pile wall over between 3 and 25 meter.
In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the cleaning device comprises a high pressure jetting system. In this respect high pressure is between 200 30 4 and 1200 bar. Such a jetting system may take in seawater for cleaning operations on the pile wall.

In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the cleaning device comprises a brush system.
10 In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the cleaning device comprises a rotatable brush system.
In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the cleaning device, preferably the rotatable brush system thereof, in use moves the marine growth removal 15 system around the circumference of the pile. In other words, the rotatable brush system pushes off against the pile with such a power sufficient to move the marine growth removal system along the circumference of the pile.
In an embodiment of the marine growth removal system, the guiding device 20 comprises a number of guiding means for guiding the marine growth removal system along the circumference of the pile when driven by the driving system around the circumference of the pile. The guiding means engage the pile at its upper rim and the outer surface of the pile wall for providing support and guidance to the marine growth removal system. The guiding means may comprise rolling members and/or sliding 25 members.
In an embodiment, the marine growth removal system comprises a detecting device for providing a pile cleanliness feedback signal.
30 The invention further relates to an assembly of an erected pile and a marine growth removal system according to the invention, suspended from the upper rim of the pile.
5
The invention further relates to a method for cleaning a pile prior to coupling the pile, by using grout, to a construction to be founded, like a windmill, the method comprising the steps; - providing an elongate inner frame member for extending in a pile interior, 5 - providing an elongate outer frame member for extending along a pile exterior, - providing a cleaning device with the inner frame member and/or the outer frame member for removing the marine growth from the interior surface and/or the exterior surface of the pile, - clamping a pile wall section between the inner frame member and the outer 10 frame member, - moving the marine growth removal system around the circumference of the pile while cleaning the interior surface and/or the exterior surface of the pile.
The invention further relates to a device comprising one or more of the 15 characterising features described in the description and/or shown in the attached drawings.
