Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a tread of a rubber tire, provided with longitudinal and transverse grooves which define profile elements engaging on the substrate, in which profile incisions are located. The invention relates in particular to a tread of a winter hand.
30The profile elements of the tread of a rubber tire which are defined by the longitudinal and transverse grooves and which engage on the ground improve the grip on the road, wherein the longitudinal and transverse grooves ensure water drainage. Because water is drained off, dangerous situations such as aquaplaning can be prevented. Particularly in the case of winter hands, the profile elements of the tread of the rubber tire engaging on the substrate are generally provided with a plurality of profile incisions - also known to those skilled in the art as lamellae. The profile incisions make the profile elements more flexible so that the grip on the surface is further improved. The slat increases the number of grip edges, creating an increased local pressure that improves traction on snow and ice. However, this is at the expense of a number of other winter features. In particular, the noise production 20 can increase during driving. The winter hand can also become more sensitive to aquaplaning. Although not necessary, the profile incisions or slats are typically placed in the axial direction of the rubber tire. The axial direction of the tire is defined in the context of this application as the direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the wheel. The axial direction therefore runs transversely to the circumferential direction of the tire, which in the context of this application is also referred to as the longitudinal direction. The tread profile of a rubber tire is generally obtained by providing a vulcanization mold in which the tire is formed with a number of steel profile sheets in the form of the desired profile. No rubber can come at the location of the profile sheets, as a result of which profile incisions form. 30
The present invention has for its object to provide an improved tread of a rubber tire according to the preamble, which combines good snow and ice traction with good driving properties on dry and wet roads, and wherein, moreover, the noise production 2 is relatively low. In particular, the present invention aims to provide such an improved tread for a winter hand.
This object is achieved according to the invention by providing a tread according to claim 1. The tread is characterized in that the width of the transverse grooves increases in the direction of the shoulder of the rubber tire. The transverse grooves of a rubber tire run from the center plane of the rubber tire in the axial direction outward toward the shoulder of the tire. In the known rubber tire the width of the transverse grooves is kept constant, inter alia for production-technical reasons. It has now been found that a tread provided with transverse grooves with width increasing in the direction of the shoulder of the rubber tire not only provides an improved grip on the road, but moreover ensures a reduced sound emission during driving. The noise production, especially with winter hands, is often greater than with summer tires, with the same driving conditions. In some cases this can lead to a less desirable comfort.
In a preferred embodiment of the tread according to the invention, the width of the transverse grooves increases by at least 10%, more preferably by at least 15%, and most preferably by at least 25%. In a typical exemplary embodiment, the transverse grooves at the height of the center plane of the rubber band have a width of approximately 6 mm, which width at the height of the shoulder has increased to approximately 8 mm.
A particularly preferred embodiment of the tread according to the invention is characterized in that the depth of the transverse grooves decreases in the direction of the shoulder of the rubber tire. A decreasing depth of the transverse grooves ensures improved handling of the rubber tire. It is known that a decreasing depth of the transverse grooves of a rubber tire, and of the profile in general, results in a reduced resistance to aquaplaning. The present preferred embodiment of the tread according to the invention appears not to have this disadvantage. Although the depth of the transverse grooves can decrease strongly from the center plane to the shoulder, for example linearly or stepwise, it is advantageous if the depth decrease is relatively limited and preferably decreases with at most 5%, more preferably with at most 10%, and most preferably with at most 20%.
33
A particularly suitable tread according to the invention is obtained in that the cross-sectional area of the transverse grooves in the direction of the shoulder of the rubber tire remains substantially the same. This embodiment variant shows an optimum balance between manageability and resistance to aquaplaning.
Yet another preferred embodiment of the tread according to the invention is characterized in that the tread comprises a central longitudinal groove which runs in a zigzag pattern in the longitudinal direction of the rubber tire. By giving a zigzag pattern to the central groove 10 in the center plane of the rubber tire, the water discharge to the transverse grooves connecting to the central longitudinal groove is improved. It has additional advantages here if the transverse grooves at the level of the connection with the central longitudinal groove extend in line with a leg of the zigzag pattern. Although the central longitudinal groove may have a variable width, its width is preferably constant in the longitudinal direction.
Although the tread according to the invention can comprise several longitudinal grooves which are mutually parallel to the center plane of the rubber tire, it is advantageous if the rubber tire comprises only one longitudinal groove, in particular a central longitudinal groove which runs in a zigzag pattern in the longitudinal direction of the rubber tire. Due to the specific shape of the central longitudinal groove, water is drained so efficiently in combination with the widthwise transverse grooves according to the invention that only one longitudinal groove is required. This has major advantages because a larger surface area of the tread is available for braking and traction.

The tread according to the invention provides a water drainage that is improved compared to the known tread. The tread according to the invention is also favorable for the removal of so-called "slush" or snow puddle, which can accumulate when driving over a snowy surface for long periods at not too low temperatures.

In another preferred embodiment of the tread according to the invention, this is characterized in that the profile elements at the height of the shoulder of the rubber tire are provided with longitudinal profile incisions which extend over the entire width of the profile elements. Such professional incisions (also referred to as shoulder grooves in the context of the application), which are preferably used in winter hands, provide for more regular wear of the rubber tire. Because the profile incisions extend over the entire width of a profile element (from the transverse groove on one side of a profile element to the transverse groove on the other side of the profile element) a kink line is formed, as it were, around which the rubber band can bend more easily. As a result, the wear pattern is more evenly distributed over the tread, which further increases the durability of the rubber tire. A further advantage of the shoulder grooves is that more grip is also obtained in the transverse direction of the rubber tire, both on wet and snowy surfaces.
The invention also relates to a profile sheet for a rubber tire. Profile sheets are generally disc-shaped and are used to obtain profile incisions in the tread of tires. To this end, a vulcanization mold in which the tire is formed along its peripheral edge is provided with a number of steel profile blades which extend in radial direction inwards. For mounting in the mold, the profile sheets are also provided with a mounting part for inclusion in the vulcanization mold. The vulcanization mold is then filled with rubber in the liquid state. No rubber can come at the location of the profile sheets, as a result of which profile incisions form there after removal of the profile sheets. It will be clear that the specific shape of (the cross-section of) the profile sheet is transferred to the (cross-section of the) profile cut formed by the profile sheet. After filling, the rubber is still vulcanized, resulting in a cured rubber tire with profile incisions.

The profile sheet according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a central part with two side cams, which form a zigzag pattern in connection with each other, and side arms connecting to the central part, the width of which increases from the central part. The profile sheet is preferably further provided with transverse arms extending substantially perpendicularly to the side arms. If several profile elements are laid contiguous next to each other, the central parts with the side socks form a zigzag pattern, and the transverse arms at their other end come into contact with a second side arm with substantially the same geometry as the first side arm. With the described profile sheets, a tread can be obtained as described in one of the appended claims. Here, the longitudinal grooves are formed in a zigzag pattern by mutually connected central portions, the transverse grooves by the side arms, and the shoulder grooves by the transverse arms. The advantages of the profile sheet according to the invention have already been extensively discussed in the context of the invented tread described above, and will no longer be repeated here.
The present invention will now be explained with reference to the accompanying figures. Herein: figure 1 shows a schematic top view of an worn tread according to the invention; and figure 2 shows a perspective view of a profile sheet according to the present invention.
With reference to Figure 1, a tread 20 of a rubber tire obtained after vulcanization is shown. Tread 20 is obtained with the aid of the profile sheet 1 described further below. Tread 20 comprises a central longitudinal groove 21, which extends in the circumferential direction X of the tire, and a number of transverse grooves 22 extending longitudinally 22 together. profile elements 23 engaging the substrate, which project therefore with respect to the grooves (21, 22). Profile elements 23 contain a number of profile incisions 24. The entire tread of a typical (winter) tire may, for example, comprise a number of profile incisions 24 that is between 500 and 2500, but the invention is not limited to a certain number of profile incisions 24. In the In the exemplary embodiment shown, the profile incisions 24 have an modified form, but this is not necessary.
The tread 20 shown in Figure 1 comprises a central longitudinal groove 21, which runs in the longitudinal direction X of the rubber tire in a zigzag pattern. The zigzag pattern comprises a succession of angled ligaments or legs (21a, 21b). The transverse grooves 22 have a main portion 22 and a run-in portion (22a, 22b). Run-in portions (22a, 22b) extend at the level of the connection with the central longitudinal groove 21 substantially in line with a leg (21a, 21b) of the zigzag pattern, as indicated for some transverse grooves at the top of figure 1. The transverse grooves arranged in tread 20 22 increase in width 6 as the transverse groove extends further from the center plane 25 of the rubber band, in other words in the direction of the shoulder of the rubber band. The shoulders of the rubber band extend on the sides of the rubber band on the left and right sides of the center plane 25. In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the width increases from a value 26 at the height of the central longitudinal groove 21 to a value 29 at the height of the shoulder of the rubber band. The profile elements 23 are provided at the height of the shoulder of the rubber band with proficiency cuts 27 extending in the longitudinal direction X, which cuts extend over the entire width of the profile elements 23. The profile incisions 27 have a depth 10 of approximately 4 mm. A central portion 28 of profile cuts 27 has a greater depth of about 8 mm.
A profile sheet comprises a part that comes into contact with the rubber during the manufacture of a rubber tire, and a connecting part with which the profile sheet can be attached to a vulcanization mold. With reference to Figure 2, the portion of a profile sheet 1 according to the invention that comes into contact with the rubber is shown. The connecting portion is not shown in Figure 2. Attachment to the vulcanization mold is done in such a way that the profile sheet 1 extends with the part shown in Fig. 2 in radial direction inwards into the vulcanization mold for a rubber tire. No rubber can come into the area of the part shown, as a result of which profile incisions form in the rubber band. The profile sheet 1 is generally manufactured from metal, and preferably from steel, but this is not necessary for the invention. Profile sheet 1 comprises a central portion 10 with two side cams 11 and 12. Two profile sheets connect to each other via cams (11, 12). When two profile sheets are connected to each other, the central part 10 with the side socks (11, 12) forms a zigzag pattern (in Figure 2 a part of a connecting second profile sheet is shown in dotted line). In the manufacture of a rubber tire, this zigzag pattern forms the longitudinal groove 21 described above in the formed rubber tire. Two side arms (13, 14) connect to the central portion 10, the width of which increases from the central portion 10. In the manufacture of a rubber tire, the two side arms (13, 14) form two transverse grooves 22 on each side of the center face 25 of the rubber tire, the width of the transverse grooves 22 increasing from the center face of the tire to the shoulder. Both side arms (13, 14) are curved at their free end. This section corresponds to the shoulder of the 7 rubber band. The end width of the transverse grooves 22 corresponds to the width of the side arm at the start of the curvature. The starting width of the transverse grooves 22 corresponds to the width of the side arm where it connects to the central part 10. The embodiment variant shown in Figure 2 has side arms (13, 14), the height of which increases from the central part 10. This leads to a tread 20 with transverse grooves 22, the depth of which decreases towards the shoulder of the rubber tire. The profile sheet 1 is further provided with transverse arms (15, 16) extending substantially perpendicularly to the side arms (13, 14). Cross arms (15, 16) have a base with a height of about 4 mm and a centrally raised portion (15a, 16a). Cross arms 10 (15, 16) lead to profile incisions 27 which extend over the entire width of the profile elements 23, have a depth of approximately 4 mm, and a central portion 28 with a greater depth of approximately 8 mm.
It will be clear that the invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments shown in the figures, but that many variations are conceivable within the scope of protection indicated by the claims.
