Abstract

1,062,861. Making plastics containers; seaming non-metallic sheet materials. BROWN MACHINE CO. March 6, 1964 [March 13, 1963], No. 9574/64. Headings B5D and B5K. [Also in Division B8] A method of making a container from plastics sheets comprises applying pressure to two mouldable sheets to form first and second container sections, severing the sections from the sheets and forming openings in one of the sections, and joining together the severed ends of the first and second sections. Conventional moulding heads extrude two sheets of thermoplastic material to supply vacuum forming machines which produce by differential pressure bottom sections 26 and top sections 27. The top sections proceed to a trimming machine where dies sever the sections from the sheet and punches form openings in the endwall of the sections, while a similar trimming severs the bottom sections 27 without punching holes. The top and bottom sections are then blown through tubes on to a conveyer 38, the top sections being inverted while in the tubes. From here the top and bottom sections pass via accumulator tables and single file conveyers 45, 46 to be " paired up " by a star-shaped wheel 50 and positioned on a rotatable carrier 55 of an assembly machine 49, the top sections 27 being supported on rotatable sleeves 65 and the bottom sections 26 being supported in fixed sleeves 84 such that the severed openings overlap. As the carrier 55 rotates the sleeves 65 are given a rotation by a belt 122 so that the top sections 27 are turned against the unrotated bottom sections 26, the heat developed by the friction serving to weld the two together. Once the sleeve 65 is given its rotation it is disconnected from the belt 122 so that when the top and bottom sections are properly joined the rotation can stop without damaging the weld. The completed container is blown on to the conveyer 46 for labelling, filling and cap application.
