Droge formulering voor chemische toiletten.Dry formulation for chemical toilets.
If a faeces / urine mixture is stored temporarily, such as in a chemical toilet, annoying odors will arise over time. S.F. Spoelstra (1980) described that odor components in aqueous manure arise from many anaerobic microbial processes. It is good to distinguish between anaerobic and anoxic in this context. By anaerobic is meant the absence of both oxygen and nitrate, anoxically means that there is no longer dissolved oxygen (O2) but there is bound oxygen as nitrate (NO3). The use of nitrates as an odor-reducing fertilizer additive has been known for a long time (Cole et al. 1976). The presence of sufficient nitrate prevents, among other things, the reduction of sulfate to (hydrogen sulfide).
Because there is no homogeneous mixture in a waste tank and nitrate does not neutralize the odor substances already present, only nitrate is usually not sufficient to prevent IS smells or to combat odors. Calcium nitrate is generally available as a plant fertilizer in a 50% liquid solution and solid in the form of calcium nitrate granules. In addition to calcium nitrate, lime nitrate also contains a small percentage of ammonium nitrate and crystal water. During denitrification, carbonate is formed which, depending on the pH, can precipitate as calcium carbonate, better known as lime scale. Traditional additives to prevent odors and build up of pressure in chemical toilets are based on formaldehyde and other preservatives such as: quaternary ammonium salts, glutaraldehyde, bronopol, zinc salts and many others. Aldehydes are among the most effective agents because, in addition to a bactericidal and fungicidal action, these also chemically neutralize odor present by entering into a complex with the reduced compounds such as mercaptans and ammonia. A major disadvantage of formaldehyde is the harmfulness and the possible relationship with the development of cancer.
US5109805 door Laporte industries beschrijft een kattenbakvulling waaraan 2-bromo-2-nitro- 1,3-propanediol (Bronopol) is toegevoegd als effectief stank reductiemiddel.US5109805 by Laporte Industries describes a cat litter to which 2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol (Bronopol) has been added as an effective odor reducing agent.
Een derde effect is de hoge gevoeligheid van 35 desulfaterende bacteriën zoals Desuifovibrio vulgaris en D. desulfuricans voor Bronopol (MICIn addition to the preservative effect that Bronopol has, the molecule would be able to catalyze the oxidation of thiol groups, resulting in an active deodorizing effect. The most important sulfur-containing odors, such as mercaptans, do indeed contain thiol (R-S-H). A second positive effect is that Bronopol splits off small amounts of formaldehyde under (weak) alkaline conditions which, as already noted, chemically neutralize odor molecules. A third effect is the high sensitivity of desulfating bacteria such as Desuifovibrio vulgaris and D. desulfuricans to Bronopol (MIC
Η 6-12,5 ppm). It is clear that Bronopol or a structure-related substance such as bromonitrodioxane can be regarded as the first-choice active substance for use as a stink fighter in liquid manure.
Hierbij wordt het effect van het I nitraat in belangrijke mate verbeterd door toevoeging van een conserveermiddel.0 EP0637577 (withdrawn) by Agrolinz describes the combination of a nitrate with an I 5 biocide in a means to limit emissions from manure. The effect of the nitrate is hereby considerably improved by the addition of a preservative.
I EP0923952 A1 door Thetford Corporation beschrijft een vloeibare formulering voor gebruik in o.a. chemische toiletten met een combinatie van nitraat en een conserveermiddel.EP0923952 A1 by Thetford Corporation describes a liquid formulation for use in, among other things, chemical toilets with a combination of nitrate and a preservative.
I WO9706834 door Thetford Corporation beschrijft een granulair nitraat product waarbij de I 10 nitraatkorrels benat worden met parfum en hierna behandeld met een droogmiddel om een vrij vloeiend homogeen product te verkrijgen.WO9706834 by Thetford Corporation discloses a granular nitrate product wherein the nitrate grains are wet with perfume and then treated with a drying agent to obtain a free-flowing homogeneous product.
I When traveling with a caravan or motorhome, the amount of weight / volume should be limited as far as possible because of the risk of overloading. One dry product, such as the formulation offered, that can be used for both the rinsing water and the waste tank of the built-in chemical toilet has important advantages. Moreover, a dry product cannot freeze. This means it can be used in the winter or stored in the caravan I or camper.
The formulation offered can, incidentally, also be used in loose cubical I chemical toilets that are used in tents, folding trailers, boats, gazebos and any other application of the chemical toilet. In addition, the offered formulation I is suitable for use in construction or event toilets provided that they have their own sewage tank I. Although waste tanks in these toilets are usually considerably larger than the tanks I of portable chemical toilets and the permanently built-in toilets in caravans and motorhomes, they are aerated with a constant supply of oxygen as a result, whereby relatively less active substances are required.
I Various mixtures of Bronopol with nitrate (Calcium nitrate) were found to be unstable. This manifested itself, among other things, by the development of a strong chlorine odor and a discoloration of the coloring agent present in some formulations. Adding a citric acid / citrate I mixture in a ratio of 1: 1 to a basic formulation of Bronopol and Calcium nitrate was found not only to stabilize the dry formulation but also to lead to an unexpected improvement in odor reduction. Without wishing to be bound by theory, the stabilizing effect on the pH could be responsible for the improved effect and the stability of the granulate. The citric acid / citrate buffer also appeared to prevent the formation of scale deposits in the waste tank to a significant extent. A small amount of a liquid surfactant could be added without the need for desiccant to keep the formulation "fluid", which means that the formulation offered is also suitable as a rinsing water additive.
Flushing water additives for chemical toilets must protect the water against spoilage and contain surfactants to give a good flush over the plastic toilet bowl.
Bronopol has a good antibacterial effect but a relatively weak fungicidal effect. The found formulation appears to have a better fungicidal effect than expected based on the Bronopol concentration and although again not wanting to be bound by theory, the nitrate in the formulation could be responsible for this effect. A very small amount of surfactant proved sufficient a good flush 10 and the breakup of faeces and toilet paper.
Non-limiting example of a formulation: 24.5 grams Bronopol 0.5 grams dishwashing liquid Dreft lemon (anionic, nonionic surfactants and perfume) 25 grams Sodium tri citrate IS Mix 25 grams citric acid monohydrate until a homogeneous mixture is obtained 925 grams Calcium nitrate (Norsk hydro) until a homogeneous mixture of 1000 grams is obtained.
In this formulation deliberately no perfume was used with the aim of being able to better assess the effect of the formulation itself. 60 grams of this formulation were dosed into the collection tank of a Porta Potti® cubic toilet (approx. 20 liters), after which approx. 2 liters of water were added. 60 grams of the formulation was also metered into the rinsing water (15 liters), whereby it was noticed that the granulate had already almost completely dissolved during filling. The entire family (male, female, girl (11) and boy (8)) used the toilet in a heated bathroom for a period of 25 weeks for both faeces and urine. Result 'The rinsing water gave a good wetting of the plastic Porta Potti® toilet bowl and remained completely clear and fresh. There was no smell of waste during use. After an average of 3-4 days the toilet was full and even when emptied, there was only a mild smell of waste. The formation of scale deposits could be prevented to a very important extent.
