Abstract

The machine (2) has a base (4) which rests on the bottom of the excavated trench. Arms (8) are mounted via pivots on the rear wall of the machine, and carry the blade (13). The arms are raised or lowered by double acting hydraulic control cylinders. The angle between the blade and the arm is varied as the arms are swung downwards, so that the blade's edge (16) cuts a near vertical slice of soil (1) from the front of the trench. When the edge (16) of the blade reaches the bottom of the trench, hydraulic pistons pivot the blade backwards, scooping the dislodged soil into the Archimedes screw conveyor (6,7).
