Abstract

The oblong propeller blades (6) are mounted on lengthwise shafts (5) turning between two opposite parallel discs (4), the shafts being at right angles to the discs, which rotate on a horizontal axis. The blades are tilted on their axes, individually or in groups, depending on predetermined parameters measured while the mechanism is running, typically the forward speed of the vessel (2) or the rotational speed of the discs. The shaft of each blade can be a quarter of the way along the chord from the blade tip. Blade adjustment can be via arms (9) fixed to their shafts and with roller ends working in cam tracks, parts of which are adjustable.
