Abstract
The present invention relates generally to a method for recovering hydrocarbons from waste sludge. More particularly, the present invention is a method for recovering hydrocarbons from waste sludge at temperature not more than 40C, comprising the steps of: reducing average viscosity of the waste sludge to less than 400 cPs by contacting the waste sludge with a nanoemulsion such that a flow-able sludge is obtained; adding water to the flow-able sludge such that relatively dense solids therein forms into a sediment whereas other components of the flow-able sludge forms into a suspension above the sediment; separating hydrocarbon solids from the suspension; and further subjecting the suspension to an oil-water separation process so as to obtain an oil phase and water phase therefrom, in which a surface active agent is added into the oil phase to further remove water and/or solids therefrom, characterized in that the nanoemulsion comprises an aqueous phase in 0.5 to 40% by weight of total composition; an non-aqueous phase in 15 to 90% by weight of total composition; a surfactant in 2 to 60% by weight of total composition; and a compound having Chemical structure I in 1 to 30% by weight of total composition, (Chemical structure I) R1-CONH-[R2-NH-R3]n-HNOC-R4 in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 are linear, branched or aromatic carbon-containing substituents having 2 to 26 carbon atoms and n is an integer ranges from 1 to 100, wherein each of the substituents comprises an alkyl group, carbonyl group, a carboxylic group, an amine group, or an amide group.
