Abstract

In a battery charging apparatus (100), when an output voltage at the generator terminal (TA) output from the single-phase alternating-current generator (A) is of negative polarity, a controlling circuit (CON) turns on the first switching element (S1) if a comparative value, which is an effective value or average value of a lamp voltage at the lamp terminal (TL), is lower than a target voltage. On the other hand, when the output voltage is of positive polarity, the controlling circuit (CON) turns on the third switching element (S2) if the comparative value is lower than a threshold voltage, which is lower than the target voltage, and turns on the second switching element if a battery voltage of the battery (B) is lower than a prescribed voltage.
