A CATALYTIC VAPOR-PHASE OXIDATION METHOD CAPABLE OF SUPPRESSING THE OCCURRENCE OF HOT SPOTS, AND A SHELL-AND-TUBE REACTOR (1) PREFERABLY USED IN THE METHOD ARE DISCLOSED HEREIN.IN THE CATALYTIC VAPOR-TUBE OXIDATION METHOD, WHEREIN USING A SHELL-AND-TUBE REACTOR (1) INCORPORATING A PLURALITY OF REACTION TUBES (4) THEREIN, A HEAT EXCHANGE MEDIUM THAT ABSORBS REACTION HEAT IS CIRCULATED WITH SURROUNDING THE REACTION TUBES (4), WHILE THE REACTION TUBES (4) ARE FILLED WITH A CATALYST AND A RAW MATERIAL GAS IS SUPPLIED, THERE BY TO PROCEED THE REACTION, THE RAW MATERIAL GAS IS ALLOWED TO FLOW DOWNWARD FROM THE TOP OF THE REACTION TUBES (4) AND THE HEAT EXCHANGE MEDIUM IS ALSO ALLOWED TO FLOW DOWNWARD FROM THE UPPER PART OF THE SHELL IN THE REACTOR (1).IN THE SHELL-AND-TUBE REACTOR (1) HAVING A PLURALITY OF REACTION TUBES (4) INCORPORATED THEREIN, A CIRCULATION PATH FOR THE HEAT EXCHANGE MEDIUM FORMED OUTSIDE THE REACTION TUBES (4), A HEAT EXCHANGE MEDIUM INTRODUCING SECTION PROVIDED ON THE UPPER PART OF THE SHELL IN THE REACTOR (1), AND A HEAT EXCHANGE MEDIUM DISCHARGE SECTION PROVIDED ON THE LOWER PART OF THE SHELL IN THE REACTOR (1), A BACK PRESSURE APPLYING MEANS FOR THE HEAT EXCHANGE MEDIUM IS FURTHER PROVIDED IN THE HEAT EXCHANGE MEDIUM DISCHARGE SECTION.FIGURE 2
