Abstract

A PROCESS FOR REMOVING IMPURITIES FROM A TITANIFEROUS MATERIAL THAT HAS BEEN SUBJECTED TO THERMAL REDUCTION IS DISCLOSED. THE PROCESS COMPRISES THE STEPS OF:(I) SUBJECTING THE THERMALLY REDUCED TITANIFEROUS MATERIAL TO A SECONDARY HEAT TREATMENT TO CONVERT IT TO A LEACHABLE FORM IN WHICH IMPURITIES PRESENT THEREIN ARE MORE READILY LEACHABLE;(II) COOLING THE RPODUCT OF STEP (I);(III) LEACHING THE COOLED HEAT TREATED TITANIFEROUS MATERIAL IN AN AQUEOUS ACID SOLUTION THAT IS CAPABLE OF DISSOLVING AT LEAST A PORTION OF ANY IMPURITIES CONTAINED IN THE TITANIFEROUS MATERIAL TO FORM A LEACHATE; AND(IV) SEPARATING THE LEACHATE FROM THE TITANIFEROUS MATERIAL.
