Abstract
PURPOSE:To recover high-purity gallium without forming hazardous material, by subjecting gallium-containing scrap to oxidizing roasting dissolving the above in alkali or acid to regulate the liquidity of solution, removing impurities, and then electrolyzing the above solution. CONSTITUTION:Gallium-containing scrap is crushed and subjected to oxidizing roasting by means of air or oxygen up to about 600-1,100 deg.C, by which arsenic, phosphorus, etc., contained in the scrap are volatilized in the form of oxides and removed and crude gallium oxide is formed. Subsequently, this crude gallium oxide is dissolved in acid or alkali by the known method to undergo regulation of the liquidity of solution, and then impurities in the solution are removed. Further, pH is adjusted, if necessary, and then metallic gallium is recovered by electrolytic extraction. By this method, high-purity gallium can be separated and recovered at a low cost from gallium-containing scrap, such as gallium- arsenic and gallium-phosphorus.
