Abstract

WATER-BASED O/W-EMULSION DRILLING FLUIDS CAN CONTAIN, AS SOME OR ALL OF THE DISPERSED OIL-PHASE, ONE OR MORE WATER-DISPERSIBLE ESTER OF A SATURED OR UNSATURED CARBOXYLIC ACID HAVING UP TO 36 CARBON ATOMS AND A MONO- AND/OR POLYFUNCTIONAL ALCOHOL, WHICH ESTER IS FLUID OR AT LEAST PLASTICALLY DEFORMABLE AT WORKING TEMPERATURE AND HAS A FLASH POINT OF AT LEAST 80?C. THESE WATER-BASED O/W-EMULSION DRILLING FLUIDS ARE SUITABLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY DEVELOPMENT OF GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS. THEY MAY, IF DESIRED, CONTAIN THE ADDITIONAL MATERIALS COMMONLY FOUND IN DRILLING FLUIDS - THUS, INSOLUBLE, FINELY PARTICULATE WEIGHTING AGENTS, EMULSIFIERS, FLUID-LOSS ADDITIVES, WETTING AGENTS, ALKALI RESERVES AND/OR AUXILIARY SUBSTANCES FOR THE INHIBITION OF DRILLED ROCK OF HIGH WATER SENSITIVITY.
