A WASHING MACHINE COMPRISES A CONTAINER FOR ACCOMMODATING CLOTHING TO BE WASHED, AN AGITATOR ROTATABLY DISPOSED AT A BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER, A DRIVE MOTOR FOR DRIVING THE AGITATOR, A REDUCTION GEAR UNIT FOR REDUCING THE DRIVE OF THE DRIVE MOTOR BEFORE IT IS TRANSMITTED TO THE AGITATOR, AND A CONTROL UNIT FOR CONTROLLING THE DRIVE MOTOR TO REPEATEDLY ROTATE THE AGITATOR IN TWO DIRECTIONS OPPOSITE TO EACH OTHER IN QUICK SUCCESSION. THE REDUCTION GEAR UNIT INCLUDES A PLURALITY OF GEARS, ALL OF WHICH ARE EMPLOYED IN THE FORM OF HELICAL GEARS. (FIG. 1)
