Description
FIXING HAIR COMPOSITION
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Hair setting compositions usually comprise solutions or suspensions with natural synthetic film-forming polymers. Numerous polymers have been used in hair fixative formulas such as natural materials such as gums, chitosan and protein or synthetic polymer derivatives with specific applications in hair fixation technology such as polyvinylpyrrolidones, polyvinylpyrrolidone-vinylacetate copolymers , acrylates, acrylamides, copolymers containing crotonic acid usually and essentially neutralized with a basic component. Examples of such crotonic acid polymers include neutralized crotonic acid / vinylacetate, and crotonic acid vinylacetate, vinylpropionate and the like. The combinations of the various polymers are now known as the active components in the hair setting formulas such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone vinylacetate (Luviskol®) with neutralized crotonic acid / vinylacetate / vinylpropionate, Luviset® CAP in non-neutralized form, both polymers manufactured by BASF , see WO 94/12147 and Luviskol® with amphoteric, an amphoteric resin of octylacrylamide / acrylates / butylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer manufactured by National Starch, see DE 4,034,315 Al.
Additionally, the 4,339,499A patent describes a combination of various polymers for styling hair. A terpolymer of vinylpropionate / crotonic acid / neutralized vinylacetate is used. European Patent 0,418.67 A and FR 26 84 000, both refer to hair setting compositions which may contain one or more polymers selected from a list comprising vinyl acetate / vinylpyrrolidone copolymer vinylneodecanoate terpolymer, neutralized crotonic vinyl acetate acid and additional polymers. However, none of the descriptions specifically describes the combination of said two polymers.
The polyvinyl pyrrolidone / vinylacetate hereinafter referred to as "PVP / VA" copolymers has been used in various dual resin compositions. By themselves, these have been successfully marketed as a single resin system for years because of their global clustering of properties, but the main property of the hair fixative, namely its property of "retention" can be improved. Other synthetic polymers have better "retention" properties but lack other attributes which can provide a high quality hair setting formula.
It has now been discovered that a polyvinylpyrrolidone / vinylacetate copolymer can be successfully combined with a copolymer comprising vinylacetate, neutralized crotonic acid and vinyl neodecanoate, obtained as resin 28-2930 or 28-2942 without neutralization from National Starch and obtain a mixture of surprising and highly desirable properties which are essentially better than a combination of PVP / V (Luviskol®) with a copolymer of crotonic acid, neutralized vini acetate and vinyl propionate (Luviset® CAP), which is a closely related combination in structure of polymers for the combination of the invention of polymers
SYNTHESIS OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention there is provided a hair setting composition comprising:
to. from about 0.5 to about 10% by weight of a polyvinylpyrrolidone / vinylacetate,
from about 0.5 to 8% by weight of at least 80% by weight of a neutralized polymer of vinylacetate, crotonic acid vini lneodecanoate, and
a solvent system compatible with the combination of copolymer a and a copolymer b per cent by weight of a to b in the range of about 1 about 5 and about 5 to about 1.
It should be noted that it is possible that there is chemical reaction between and among the components listed above any other components, which may be present in the composition. Therefore, it is intended to include such a reaction product within the claimed composition as well.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The copolymer comprising polyvinylpyrrolidone / vinylacetate is obtained from BASF Luviskol®. The amount of each monomer in the polymer preferably ranges from about 20 to about 50 wt.% Of vinylpyrrolidone (VP) and from about 80 to about 50 wt.% Of vinyl acetate (VA), more preferably about 25 to 40. % by weight of vinylpyrrolidone and around 75 to about 60% by weight of vinylpyrrolidone. Especially preferred is the ratio of about 30% vinylpyrrolidone and about 70% by weight of vinyl pyrrolide commercially available from BASF as Luviskol® 371, or 50% by weight polymer solution in isopropanol. Polyvinylpyrrolidone / vinyl acetate copolymer is preferably in the hair composition in amount of from about 1 to about 6% by weight.
The second copolymer comprises a polymer formed from vinylacetate, crotonic acid and vinylneodecanoate. polymer is generally at least neutralized 80 preferably at least about 90% neutralized can be 100% neutralized. Any agent neutralizing basic compatible with the composition can be employed to an inorganic materials such as potassium sodium hydroxide. Organic amines or alkanolamines are generally easily used for neutralization. As indicated, the polymer can be obtained in a non-neutralized form from the Nation Starch Company as Resyn 28-2930 or 28-2942.
Examples of such neutralizing amines include:
triethanolamine 2-amino-2-methyl-l, 3-propanediol 2-amino-2-ethyl-l, 3-propanediol 2-amino-2-methyl-l-propanol 2-amino-2-methyl-2-pentanol l -amino-2-methyl-2-propanol 2-amino-1-butanol 3-amino-2-pentanol 2-amino-1-phenyl-1-butanol 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol 2-dimethylamino- 2-methyl-1, 3-propanediol tris- (hydroxymethyl) -aminomethane tris- (hydroxymethyl) -dimethylaminomethane N 1 - (2-hydroxymethyl) -2-methyl-1,2-propanediamine Neutralization with 2-amino-2-methyl- l-propanol or 2-amino-2-methyl-l, 3-propanediol or triethanola is preferred.
The amount of the partially or completely neutralized crotonic acid copolymer present in the composition is preferably from about 1 to about 6% by weight. The polymer preferably a and the polymer b are present in the composition in a ratio by weight d about 1: 3 to about 3: 1 polymer a a polymer b.
The vehicles which carry the polymers are usually alcoholic or hydroalcoholic. The alcohol contained in the hair setting composition is one of the common lower alcohols such as isopropanol and ethanol, typically used in similar types of hair setting compositions. The alcohol can be used between the amounts of about 10% and about 90% by weight of the composition preferably from about 15% to about 85%.
The hair setting composition can contain a total water content of from 0 to about 20% by weight, a water content of from about 0.5 to about 15% by weight being preferred.
The hair setting composition may have pH values between 4.5 - 9.5.
The composition also contains other typical cosmetic ingredients such as perfume, oils, extracts, vitamins and their derivatives / precursors, plasticizers, hydrophobic substances such as silicone derivatives, solubilizers for oils and preservatives up to 1% each by weight if it was found to be advantageous for the composition.
The hair setting composition can be filled in pressurizable containers, preferably with an added propelant used as a hair styling product n propellant.
When the composition is used as an aerosol hair setting product, it contains an additional amount of from 5 to about 65% by weight of the total composition, preferably from about 25% to about 70% by weight of a propellant and fill in an appropriate pressurized container.
Propellants suitable for the hair setting composition include the lower alkanes such as N-butane, iso-butane, propane and mixtures thereof with fluorocarbon 152 a and dimethyl ether as well as the compressed gases such as N2, N20, C02 and mixtures thereof. same with the propellants mentioned above.
When the composition is present as hair spray without spray or a spray for concentrated hair, the composition can be sprayed by using a mechanically operated spray pump device in a satisfactory manner.
A spray pump device operated mechanically allows a liquid to be sprayed without the use of propellants as listed above. An example, but not limited to that is a rosette pump or an elastic container equipped with an attached spray valve in which the fixed composition of the hair is filled under a high pressure expanding container and in which the composition is actuated when opening the valve Sprayer can be used as an appropriate spray device / package.
The hair fixative composition is excellently compatible with free halogen and / or dimethyl ether hydrocarbons and results in amazing hair-setting properties.
The following examples serve to explain the material object of the composition more completely and do not attempt to unduly limit the invention. In the text given below VP is the abbreviation for vinylpyrrolidone and VA is short for vinyl acetate. PVP is polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Resin 28-2930 has previously been identified as vinylacetate crotonic acid, vinyl neodecanoate and Luviset® CAP was previously identified as a copolymer of vinyl acetal vinyl propionate and crotonic acid. Both resin 28-2930 and Luviset® CAP are purchased in an unneutralized form and neutralized with an amine.
The polyvinylpyrrolidone / vinylacetate used in the examples is 30% by weight of 70% polyvinylpyrrolidone per pe of vinylacetate.
EXAMPLES
Example 1
