Abstract

La presente invencion se refiere a una planta de sandia polinizadora diploide mejorada y a un metodo utilizado para maximizar el rendimiento de sandias sin semilla, triploides, por area. La planta de sandia polinizadora mejorada de la invencion es ya sea una variedad hibrida, una variedad polinizada abierta o una variedad sintetica, que exhibe las caracteristicas de hojas pequena y un fruto con una cacara fragil que se agrieta cuando el fruto esta demasiado maduro o se rompe cuando se aplican las fuerzas fisicas relativamente pequenas. La planta de sandia de la invencion tambien esta caracterizada preferentemente por una duracion prolongada de floracion, por lo cual se incrementa el numero de flores de sandia triploide que son polinizadas y los frutos establecidos. El metodo para producir un fruto de sandia sin semilla, incluye las etapas de proporcionar una planta de sandia diploide polinizadora, que se extiende toda la duracion de floracion de la planta polinizadora mientras que se reduce el numero de tales plantas necesarias para polinizar el mismo numero de plantas de sandia triploide, y maximizar la dispersion de la planta de sandia polinizadora en todo el campo de las plantas de sandia triploide.
