Abstract

A pipeline vessel includes a pipe carrying drum (30) mounted with its axis parallel to the fore-aft direction of the hull. A launch structure (36) consists of telescopic arcuate memebers (38 and 58) which are selectively moveable to vary the launch angle, Pipe engaging clamps (46 and 48) engage the pipe along a curved path, and are reciprocally moveable along a curved track to tension the pipe. The cuved path has an angle of curvature which is aproximmately equal to the residual curvature of the pipe drawn from the drum. The launch angle can also be adjusted by moving the angle or position of the curved path within a plane which is substantially perpendicular to the drum axis. An abandonment and recovery system is mounted of the launch structure, which is moverable alongside the drum as a level wind.
