Abstract

947,196. Laying submarine cables. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE AND GAZ DE FRANCE. Jan. 22, 1962 [March 21, 1961], No. 2295/62. Heading H2C. [Also in Division F2] In a method of positioning a submarine cable 10 so as to enable further sections of the cable to be attached to a section of the cable already laid, there is applied to the end of the section already laid horizontal and vertical forces to cause the section to assume a substantially S-shaped curvature with the upper end thereof substantially, horizontal and defining a downwardly-directed concavity, and vertical forces are applied to the section through the intermediary of a flexible guide 11 connected to a rigging craft 15, the positioning being effected by imparting a horizontal translational movement to the guide and by sliding the cable relative to the guide. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the guide is tubular and has nozzles 12, 13 at the entry and exit ends thereof, and also at the entry end a braking device 20 constituted by a toroidal hollow body disposed around the cable and connected to a source of fluid pressure. The guide carries primary buoyancy means in the. form of an external bundle of elongated floats 16 of cellular material, e.g. polystyrene, and a series of floats 17 of variable buoyancy secured to the guide by ropes 19. In a modification, the guide entry end 12X is taken on board the ship 15X where jointing of successive cable or pipe sections takes place. The primary buoyancy means comprises a pair of pipes 25 which increase in cross-sectional area from the upper to the lower extremities thereof and secured to the guide and connected to a source of compressed air. In the event of bad weather, the buoyancy of the guide is adjusted to allow the guide to be laid on the sea bed. Specifications 942,218 and 947,195 are referred to.
