A mass flow gravity feed furnace charger comprises a vertically-oriented elongated hollow conduit (51) which is associated with an apertured heat-resistant charge-well cover (30) adapted to lie essentially in contact with the upper surface of a molten metal pool (23) in the charge well (10) of a metal melting furnace (11). Scrap metal (80) charged into the conduit (51) collects atop the surface of the molten metal pool (23), since the bottom opening (52) of the conduit communicates with the charge-well cover aperture (33) and permits the scrap to fall by gravity directly into the molten metal in the charge well (10).
