Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the treatment of a calcium sulfate-based powdered raw material to prepare a hydraulic binder. This process comprises combining the following two successive treatment steps: (a) -Heating the powdered matter in a baking tunnel (1) at a temperature comprised between 220 degree C and 360 degree C in suitable conditions so as to substantially form an alpha variety calcium sulfate; (b) - subjecting the matter thus heated to a thermal quenching in a cooling device (2) by means of a cool and dry gas to stabilize the alpha anhydrite and to block the evolution thereof towards other crystallographic varieties. The process allows a new hydraulic binder to be obtained, which comprises an alpha anhydrite weighing proportion higher than 15 percent, having improved response characteristics to fire and resistance.
