Abstract

Hydrophobic nonwoven substrates uniformly coated with a wetting agent are described which have improved tensile strength properties over conventional coated nonwoven substrates. Processes for applying a high solids wetting agent to a substrate in a manner that results in low moisture uptake and reduces or eliminates drying requirements are also described. Taking low humidity reduces the degradation of the tensile strength of the material normally resulting from the wetting and drying of non-woven substrates. In one modality the untreated side remains hydrophobic producing a "one-way vulva" effect. In another embodiment, both sides of the material are treated with direct application to only one side of the material. The treatment methods described include printing and applying brush spray. The brush spray application provides the additional advantages of preserving the high of the material and coating both sides of the material or at least penetrating deeply into the material.
