The liquid is separated from the waste gas and this waste gas is used to cool the heat exchange structure and is then recirculated. A portion of the gas is compressed at a pressure intermediate between the high and low pressures, isentropically expanded at a first temperature, and is used to cool a relatively hot portion of the heat exchange structure and is then recirculated. A portion of the high pressure gas expands isentropically at a second temperature and is used to cool a relatively cold portion of the heat exchange structure and then again expands isentropically at a third temperature at that low pressure and returns through the heat exchange structure to cool it and then it is recirculated. That first temperature is greater than the second temperature and the second temperature is greater than the third temperature. The gas is preferably nitrogen. The cycle may be part of an air separation unit, the nitrogen product of which at low pressure is integrated for the liquefaction cycle and the nitrogen product of high pressure is fused with the gas of the low pressure cycle.
