Abstract

1,098,059. Refrigerating. LA FLEUR CORPORATION. Feb. 14, 1966 [Feb. 15, 1965], No. 6363/66. Headings F4H and F4P. In a refrigeration system at least some of the cold gaseous refrigerant from an expansion turbine is used to liquefy a gas in a heat exchanger and a minor portion of the expander refrigerant is used to pre-cool the gas to be liquefied. As shown, gaseous refrigerant from a turbine 18 is passed through a heat exchanger 24 to liquefy a pre-cooled gas passing through coil 25. The refrigerant stream is then divided into a minor portion which is used in heat exchanger 34 to pre-cool the gas to be liquefied and a major portion which is used in heat exchanger 16 to cool compressed refrigerant passing to turbine 18. The portions re-combine in line 36 and pass to the inlet of compressor 10. In a modification (Fig. 2a, not shown) the expanded refrigerant stream is divided upstream of heat exchanger 24. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) two compressors (44 and 50) with an intercooler (48) are used, one compressor (50) being driven by the expansion turbine (60), and the gas to be liquefied is compressed in a further compressor (84) and cooled in a heat exchanger (88) before pre-cooling and liquefaction. After liquefaction the gas may be passed through a throttle (95) to a storage tank (96). The refrigeration system may include a power-generation cycle as described in Specification 1,038,575. The refrigerant may be helium and the gas to be liquefied air or nitrogen. Operating temperatures and pressures are specified.
