Abstract

La invención implica la provisión de mutantes de algas recombinantes que tienen una modificación genética en una secuencia de ácido nucleico que codifica una enzima biosintética de trehalosa y/o una modificación genética en un ácido nucleico que codifica un dominio de unión a ARN. Y en algunas formas de realización, cualquiera de estos mutantes de algas además puede tener una mutación genética en una secuencia de ácido nucleico que codifica un polipéptido SGI1. La atenuación de uno, dos o los tres genes da como resultado un organismo mutante con una mayor productividad de lípidos. También se descubrió que una, dos, tres o más mutaciones genéticas se pueden acumular o "apilar" en una célula u organismo mutante en particular para dar como resultado aumentos adicionales en la producción de productos lipídicos. Los productos lipídicos de estos mutantes son útiles como biocombustibles o para otros productos químicos especiales.
