Abstract

The purpose of the present invention is to obtain: a carburized component having sufficient surface fatigue strength, moreover a carburized component having surface fatigue strength and bending fatigue strength; and a steel material for obtaining the carburized component. The present invention is a steel material for vacuum carburizing, which contains C, Si, Mn, S, P, Cr, Mo, V, Al and N, and wherein vanadium carbide has an average circle-equivalent diameter of 25 nm or less. The present invention also includes a method for producing the steel material, and specifically provides a method for producing a steel material for vacuum carburizing, wherein a mass of steel having a predetermined chemical composition is maintained at 1,200°C or higher for 30-300 minutes and slabbed, and then is subjected to hot rolling, while setting the heating temperature before hot rolling to 950°C or higher and setting the heating retention time before hot rolling to 30 minutes to 5 hours.
