Abstract

The present disclosure is related to facilitate honey production and the sustained annual arithmetic reproduction of Melipona spp bee colonies; consists in using a support for the brood nest and a Queen excluder, made with wood from the region; with measures designed to be used in the Reversible Box known as Api-Mel in its version for breeding the Melipona bees. These attachments allow directing and supporting the vertical development of the brood nest, helping maintain a firm and ordered structure within the colony, facilitating the reproduction of the same. Furthermore, as the nest develops a Queen excluder may be placed to induce the honey production in a single chamber to avoid causing damage to the nest during the harvest. The same attachments can be used for honey production and also in the reproduction of colonies of other stingless bee species. The results obtained with this method, that facilitates honey production and the increased sustained annual arithmetic reproduction of Melipona spp bee colonies, have been excellent. A 100% of the colonies of M. beecheii and M. Solani bees reproduced with this method, generated new fertilized queens, and consequently new colonies. The occasional loss of colonies has been related to external factors to the Melipona bee bioecology. This means that there is no rejection to the method used. Also, this method is simple, allowing easy manipulation of the colony. With the M. beecheii especies, a second reproduction has been achieved within the same year; generating three daughter colonies. The development of the colony and efficiency in honey extraction has been generating excellent harvests in both species, providing strong colonies and with a large bee population to ensure their multiplication.
