Abstract

Se proporciona un método para producir un producto de fermentación en un sistema de fermentación a partir de biomasa que ha sido pre-tratado y separado en un primer componente y un segundo componente. El método comprende preparar una pasta comprendiendo: suministrar el primer componente al sistema de fermentación; y proporcionar un etanológeno al sistema de fermentación. El método también comprende ajustar el pH de la pasta a un rango de aproximadamente 4.5 hasta aproximadamente 6.5, mantener el primer componente y etanológeno en el sistema de fermentación a una temperatura de entre aproximadamente 25 y aproximadamente 37 grados Celsius, y recuperar el producto de fermentación del sistema de fermentación. El etanológeno es provisto al sistema de fermentación en una concentración de menos de 2 gramos de etanológeno en una base seca por litro de pasta. La biomasa comprende material lingocelulósico. El primer componente comprende pentosa, la cual puede comprender xilosa. El etanológeno es capaz de fermentar xilosa a etanol.
