The occlusive composition can then flow to a suitable heat exchanger, where the temperature of the occlusive composition is high such that it falls in the range of about 40 to about 90 ° C, so that the viscosity of the occlusive composition is adjusted to a level which is suitable for printing by intaglio. As discussed above, the viscosity for intaglio printing usually needs less than about 200 cP. Preferably, the temperature of the occlusive composition is selected such that the viscosity is less than about 100 cP. Although a separate heat exchanger is described, it may be desirable to provide thermal conditioning of the occlusive composition in the reservoir itself. For example, heating elements and stirring apparatuses may be included in the reservoir to maintain the elevated temperature for the occlusive composition. The placement of thermal conditioning in the tank has the advantage of making pump selection and operation requirements simpler because the pump does not need the occlusive composition at the higher viscosity associated with lower temperatures because the occlusive composition would already be hot and therefore, at the lowest viscosity. If thermal conditioning occurs in the tank or in a separate heat exchanger, it is important that the thermal conditioning step occurs at a selected temperature to avoid scorching the occlusive composition. Scorching can cause discoloration of the occlusive composition and can affect the occlusive characteristics of the composition. Thus, scorching will be avoided while the occlusive composition is subjected to thermal conditioning. Regardless of where the thermal conditioning step occurs, the heated occlusive composition is delivered to a suitable applicator that spreads the occlusive composition along the length of the intaglio cylinder. This step of spreading can be effected by emptying or atomizing the occlusive composition on the intaglio cylinder or simply by delivering the liquid occlusive composition to a bath of occlusive composition that is collected at the bottom of the intaglio cylinder between the intaglio cylinder and a manifold. EXAMPLES The following examples are intended to be non-limiting and are merely illustrative. Cigarettes of five different casings (deicr, casings with five configurations of different fringed regions), were tested for ignition propensity ("I P") and self-extinction ("SE") at 0o (horizontal). The base web of each of the wraps has a permeability of 33 CORESTA and a base weight of 25 g / m2. As used herein "I P" refers to total burning through a cigarette. Thus, the envelopes having fringed regions comprising only first, second and third zones preferably have wider areas of higher permeability (i.e., about 1.5 mm or about 2 mm) than areas of higher permeability of envelopes having fringed regions comprising first, second, third, fourth and fifth zones. The terms and phases used herein are not intended to be interpreted with mathematical or geometric precision, but the goometric terminology will be interpreted as meaning roughly or similar to geometric terms and concepts.
