Abstract

Polyester compositions are disclosed that include polyester polymers or copolymers having incorporated therein titanium nitride particles that provide one or more of the following advantages:improving the reheat properties of the compositions, improving the color of the compositions through reduced yellowness, and improving the UV-blocking properties of the compositions. Processes for making such compositions are also disclosed. The titanium nitride particles may be incorporated in the polyester by melt compounding, or may be added at any stage of the polymerization, such as during the melt-phase of the polymerization. A range of particle sizes may be used, as well as a range of particle size distributions. The polyester compositions are suitable for use in packaging made from processes in which a reheat step is desirable, or decreased yellowness is desired, or increased resistance to the effects of ultraviolet light is desired, or any combination of the foregoing.

Description

POLYMER COMPOSITIONS AND POLYESTER COPOLYMER CONTAINING TITANIUM NITRIDE PARTICLES FIELD OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to compositions that are useful in such as in the manufacture of beverage containers by blow molding or other hot forming processes. in which the polyester is The compositions of the invention can exhibit improved reheating and improved blocking ability while exhibiting a visual appearance through good clarity and with reduced ripening. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Many containers such as those made of poly and used in containers to be formed by the blow molding of recalen or other operations that require heat softening of the In the blow molding of preforms of which are extrusion molding in the form of tube are heated above the transition temperature vitrea and 1 ueqo are placed in a bottle mold to receive a pres urizado through its end This technology is well known in the as for example in the North American patent to incorporate it in the present by n a blow molding operation the radiation energy of infrared quartz heaters is generally used to reheat the preforms In the preparation of packaging containers using operations that require heat softening the time of or the time required for the preform to reach the proper temperature for stretch blow molding called time affects both the energy and the as the equipment If it has become possible to produce more units per time it is desirable to provide polyester compositions that provide rec-1 properties in fam i in faster or with less energy than or compared with conventional polyester compositions. In the above, they vary with the absorption of the polymer. Ades to reheat p forms of polymer are typically lamps that have a spectrum of emission with wavelengths that vary from BOO nm to greater than No po teres absorb radiation in the region of BOO nm to BOO. of max absorption of energy lamps and increase the reheat ratio of materials that will increase the absorption of infrared energy are sometimes added these tend to have a negative effect on the visual appearance of the feneció res of for example increasing the level of nebulosity causing that the article has an appearance since the compounds with absorbance in the light wave interval nm to 780 appear colored to the eye that absorb yli mpa rt ra n with 1 ora I po 1 i A variety of absorbing compounds of black and gray bodies They have done as much as they do in order to improve the characteristics of slow relapse of the preforms with reclining lamps ready to rec a 1 in Larri i in Lo include black iron metal iron oxide iron composites spinel pigments and light absorbing dyes The amount of the absorbent compound that can be added to the polymer by its impact on the visual properties pol as it can be expressed as a value and that is expressed as a value and as it is described in addition to the amount to retain an acceptable level of brightness and color in the blown articles and the amount of additive rock 1 in tam i can be decreased which in turn the type and quantity of the i of rock 1 also added to of is adjusted to give desired balance the increase of the proportion of in size and the retention of levels of and color to reasons a blue hue is normally desired in containers of containers for applications cheric articles with a nuance to be more eye and are preferred in these ii the basic color theory indicates that i and the are Eisto colors following e that the one these colors of the visible white led An article that is meant to be oLro By when the light of love is removed from the light Article is dominated by blue that can be measured as a color system can be an undesirable color in containers and agents to zu arn int As a result, organic products have been used to increase the blue color of the packaging, thus moving the value from one to the other, creating a more container. It would be desirable to simultaneously increase the proportion of and decrease the proportion in the color and the brightness such as by the yellow 1 as it increases of the ti or in a composition r op I ta that the appearance is important in such and because the bottles that a bluish tint have been very successful in and in commercial and aqua dots, it would be an advantage to provide an adi of rock i in order to impart a bluish tinge to the polymers in which it is used in this way as an agent of water. The esterification reaction is continued until a degree of esterification of at least is but more typically until a degree of esterification of at least is achieved to make the monomer. The esterification monomer is typically not catalyzed in the direct esterification process and catalyzed in the transesterification process. The polycondensation catalysts may be optionally added in the esterification zone together with the catalysts of the typical rification catalysts which may be used include alkoxides of dibutyl dilaurate used separately or optionally with either magnesium acetates or benzoates other catalyst materials such as are well known to those skilled in the art. Compounds containing phosphorus and cobalt compounds may also be present in the product range. Resulting compounds formed in the esterification zone include bis-terephthalate monomer oligomers of molecular weight and water as the byproduct of together with other minute amounts of impurities formed by the reaction of the catalyst and other components such as dyes or the compounds they contain Relative amounts of BHET and oligomeric species will vary depending on whether the process is an esterification process in which case the amount of the oligomeric species are significant and even present as the species or a transesterification process in which case the relative amount of BHET predominates over the The water is removed as the esterification reaction proceeds and the excess ethylene glycol is removed to provide equilibrium conditions The esterification zone typically produces the monomer mixture and if continuously in a series of one or more monomer mixture and oligomer could be produced in one or more Se reactors without in a process for making the reaction mixture will contain monomeric species such as bis naphthalate and its oligomers. Once the ester monomer is made to the desired degree it is transported from the esterification reactors in the area. of esterification to the polycondensation zone comprised of a prepol zone and a zone of polycondensation reactions are initiated and continued in the molten phase in a prepolymerization zone and terminated in the molten phase in a zone after which the molten material solidifies in the precursor solids in the form of or any other solids for the solids are referred to as but it is understood that a pellet can have any or if the polycondensation reaction can be continued by putting the precursor pellets in the solid state a status zone Although the reference is made to an area of and to an area it is to be understood that each zone can buy A series of one or more different reaction vessels operating in different or zones can be combined in a reaction vessel that uses one or more that operate under different conditions in a reactor. This prepolymer stage can involve the use of one or more reactors operated one or more batch reactors or even one or more stages or reaction performed in a reactor vessel In some designs the zone represents the first half of the polycondensation in terms of time while the zone of Finish represents the second half of the polycondensation While other reactor designs can adjust the residence time between the prepolymerization zone to the finishing zone in about a ratio of a common distinction in all designs between the prepolymerization zone and the zone of finish is that the rear zone operates at a temperature plus pressure plus a proportion of surface renewal e higher than the operating conditions in the area of each of the polymerization zones and finishing comprises one or a series of more than one container and the polymerization and finishing reactors are sequenced in a series as part of a continuous process for the manufacture of the polymer In the area also known in the industry as the pol The monomers of low molecular weight and minor amounts of oligomers are polymerized via the polycondensation to form polyester polyethylene terephthalate polyester in the presence of a catalyst. If the catalyst is not added in the catalyst esterification step, the catalyst is added. In this step to catalyze the reaction between the monomers and the low molecular weight oligomers to form the prepolymer and separate the diol as a Si a polycondensation catalyst was added to the esterification zone it is typically mixed with the diol and fed in the esterification reactor as the feed of other compounds such as compounds containing compounds and dyes can also be added in the prepolymerization zone. These compounds can not be added in the finishing zone instead of or in addition in the area of In a process based on those skilled in the art they recognize that other catalyst material and dots addition of the catalyst material and other ingredients vary from a direct esterification process. Typical polycondensation catalysts include the zinc and tin compounds in an amount ranging from 1000 ppm based on the weight of the polyester polymer.
