Abstract
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of ammonium and ammonium carbonate, comprising the steps of: a) passing combustion gas from the furnace, which comprises hydrogen and carbon dioxide in contact with cold potassium carbonate to form a solution of potassium bicarbonate and free hydrogen; b) separating and reacting free hydrogen with nitrogen to form ammonium gas; c) removing at least a portion of the potassium bicarbonate solution and heating it to regenerate the potassium carbonate solution while releasing hot carbon dioxide and water vapor; d) recycling and cooling the potassium carbonate solution from step c) for use according to step a); characterized in that it includes the additional steps of: e) reacting ammonium from step b) with carbon dioxide and steam from step c) in a reaction chamber to form ammonium carbonate, where the steam is stoichiometrically in excess to form a flowable mixture of ammonium carbonate in the chamber; f) passing at least a portion of the ammonium from stage b) through the turbine, prior to reaction stage e) where a pressure drop occurs through said turbine as a result of the reaction; and g) removing the mixture from the chamber while maintaining the reduced pressure therein.
