Abstract

The device comprises a housing (10) through which pressurised fluid flows axially and which is connected by a side opening (24) to a source of powdered material under a pressure greater than that of the fluid. The housing contains two coaxial sleeves (16,18), the inner sleeve have an axial bore (20) for passage of the fluid and at least one of the sleeves being rotatable about its longitudinal axis (O). The sleeves have apertures (30,32) at the level of the side opening (24) which can be aligned to define a passageway of adjustable size for connection of the powdered material source with the fluid flow in the inner sleeve. The device is used for metering powdered material into a propellant gas stream, esp. for injecting solid fuel into a shaft furnace. The device has relatively few moving parts so that the risks of escape of the powdered material and seizure of the device are reduced.
