Abstract

본 발명은 강유전성 액정 표시 소자(ferroelectric liquid crystal device)의 다계조 표시 장치 및 방법에 관한 것으로, 상세하게는 강유전성 액정 표시 소자의 전체적인 화상이 균일하도록 계조(gray scale)표시가 가능한 다계조 표시 장치 및 방법에 관한 것이다.
즉, 본 발명에 따른 강유전성 액정 표시 소자는 한 화소의 영역을 임의의 크기로 나누고, 이 나누어진 분할영역에 광투광율이 다르고 유전율이 비슷한 물질 및 유전율과 광투과율이 모두 다른 물질들로 투명전극의 위 또는 위 아래에 분할영역 별로 두께가 같도록 형성하여, 저항기의 전압 강하에 의한 전압 배분 방식으로 각 화소의 특정 부분의 강유전성 액정의 상태만을 선택적으로 바꾸어 주어 각 분할 영역의 투광율을 상대적으로 달라지도록 하여 더욱 세분화된 계조(gray scale)를 표시함으로써, 한 화소 내에서의 강유전성 액정층의 두께차로 인해 발생하는 표시화면의 불균일성을 근원적으로 없애고, 보다 효율적인 계조 표현을 쉽게 구현할 수 있는 장점이 있다.

Claims (3)

  1. 소정의 간격을 두고 서로 대향하는 제1기판 및 제2기판 의 내측면 상에 각 화소 마다 소정의 폭으로 적어도 2개 이상으로 분할되게 형성된 투명 전극들 및 이 투명 전극들 상면에 서로 다른 광 투광율을 갖는 유전체층을 가지는 액정 표시 소자에 있어서, 상기 투명 전극들의 일측 단자들에 신호 전압을 각기 다른 레벨의 전전압 신호로 배분하여 주는 신호 전압 배분 수단을 구비하여 된 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 표시 소자의 다계조 표시 장치.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 신호 전압 배분 수단은 상기 각 화소 마다의 투명 전극들의 각 일측 단자에 소정수의 저항기를 접속하여 신호 전압을 분압하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 표시 소자의 다계조 표시 장치.
  3. 인가되는 주신호의 전압을 각 화소의 각 분할 영역에 마련된 전극들에 접속된 소정의 분압 수단으로 분압하는 단계; 및 상기 분압 수단에 의해 분압된 전압이 상기 분할 영역에 마련된 전극들을 구동할 수 있는 소정의 임계 전압 이상이면 상기 전극들을 구동하는 단계;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 강유전성 액정 표시 소자의 다계조 표시 방법.
