Claims (8)

An optical modulator comprising a substrate of an electro-optical active material having an optical waveguide having a column electrode and a traveling wave electrode for applying an electric field to an optical waveguide of an active region extending in one direction on a first surface of the substrate, wherein And a ground plane electrode defining each side of the substrate extending from an adjacent opposing face of the column electrode and extending parallel to the active area of the substrate.
