Catheters (stents) have been used for a long time as devices to treat diseases or perform surgical procedures. A catheter is generally a thin tube, also called a stent, that can be used to drain blood or inject medications into the body.
A common use of a catheter is in the form of a urethral catheter, in which a thin hollow tube is inserted through the urethra into the urethral bladder to drain the bladder from the urine that collects within the bladder. Urinary catheters have two general uses, one is intermittent catheterization and the other is permanent catheterization.
For example, many people who self-catheterize several times a day as part of their daily lives use intermittent urinary catheters. Typically, catheters for intermittent catheterization are used by patients suffering from urinary retention due to spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Using an intermittent catheter, bladder drainage can be achieved through a natural or artificial urinary catheter.
Intermittent catheterization is when an intermittent catheter is inserted into the urethra to drain urine from the bladder, and the catheter is then removed from the body. Permanent catheterization is the insertion of a relatively soft and flexible catheter into the body such that the catheter remains in place for a significant period of time, such as days or weeks, in order to provide permanent drainage of the bladder and reduce the need for multiple insertion of catheters by the healthcare provider. This is when it is inserted and fixed inside the body. This type of catheter is also called an indwelling catheter.
A conventional indwelling urethral catheter generally has an inflatable retention member disposed at the entrance end of the catheter to secure the catheter within the bladder, and the catheter inflates the retention member and at least one drainage channel for draining urine from the bladder. It includes at least one expansion channel for
However, conventional urethral devices are difficult to insert into the urethra, difficult to fix after insertion, and have high surgical costs.
