A rotatable mascara brush may be implemented by supporting the stem of the brush for rotational movement relative to a handle.

U.S. Patent No. 8,028,707 to Wyatt et al. describes a cosmetic applicator that includes a handle and a stem with an applicator head coupled to the stem. An actuator is coupled to the applicator head to move the applicator head in an oscillating motion.

Despite all types of applicator heads, as well as handles that can rotate or vibrate the applicator head, users with tremors or limited hand and arm mobility can enjoy fine control of cosmetics, especially lip glosses and mascaras. Aspects of the present disclosure relate to an applicator coupling element, also referred to as an adapter, that connects any of the various types of cosmetic applicators to a motion stabilizer device, leveling device or applicator stabilizer unit.

In order to provide a universal connection of cosmetic applicators of various shapes and sizes, the applicator coupling element (or adapter) is via a bayonet coupling, friction fitting coupling, magnetic coupling, snap fitting coupling or threaded coupling. The cosmetic applicator is detachably attached to the applicator stabilizer unit.

In Figures 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d some various types of cosmetic applicators of various shapes and sizes are shown in schematic diagrams. Some cosmetic applicators, particularly applicators including brushes and puffs, may include large diameter handles. The handles may be shaped for ease of handling as in FIG. 2A, or with a long conical end as in FIG. 2B, with a capped end as in FIG. 2C, or a cylindrical shape with a short conical end as in FIG. 2D. can be

In Figures 3a, 3b and 3c cosmetic applicators inserted into the handle are shown in schematic views, respectively. The applicators may be lip gloss brushes or mascara applicators. The handles may be tapered as in FIG. 3A, or cylindrical as in FIGS. 3B and 3C.

In Fig. 4, a motion stabilization device is shown in a schematic diagram. The motion stabilization device 400 may also include a pair of magnets 403 on either side of the connection component 405 as well as a handle for easy gripping of the device. The shape of the connection element 405 and the orientation of the two magnets 403 ensure a one-way connection direction with an external device. The motion stabilization device may include a circuit board 411 with sensors, controllers and motors that control the movement of the coupling component 405 relative to the movement of the tremor being detected. Sensors detect hand movements, and a controller distinguishes between intended movements and unwanted tremors of the hand. To stabilize the cosmetic applicator, the controller directs the motors to move the cosmetic applicator in the opposite direction of any detected tremor.

In Fig. 5 a leveling device is shown in a schematic diagram. The leveling device 500 includes a pair of magnets 503 on both sides of a connector 505. The shape of the connector 505 and the direction of the two magnets 503 ensure a one-way connection direction with an external device. The leveling device may include a circuit board 511 with sensors, controllers and motors that control the movement of the connecting component 521 to maintain a level over the operating range of the leveling device. The sensors detect the intended movement of the hand and other changes in three dimensions. To keep the cosmetic applicator level, the controller directs the motors to flex a flexible joint holding the cosmetic applicator attached at right angles.

In Fig. 6 the applicator stabilizer unit is shown schematically in an angled state. US Pre-Registration Publication No. 2020/0085168A1, incorporated herein by reference, describes the applicator stabilizer unit in more detail. As shown in FIG. 6 , the connecting component 621 of the applicator stabilizer unit 600 is configured to twist between a vertical position and an angled position (as shown in FIG. 6 ). This is achieved with a hinge mechanism included inside the linking component 621 . In FIG. 6 it is shown that the hinge mechanism is a self-leveling/movement stabilizing hinge. 7 shows a diagram of internal components of an applicator stabilizer unit 600 according to one embodiment. Within the handle portion 601, the unit includes a power source 701 which may be a battery or the like. The applicator stabilizer unit 600 is a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) that may include a position sensor circuit 711, a reader circuit 713, a control circuit 715, and a communication interface 717 as understood in the art. ) 703.

For example, as the sensor circuit 711, the PCBA detects unintended muscle movements and measures signals generated when the user adversely affects the operation of the cosmetic applicator in relation to such unintended muscle movements. To do so, at least one inertial sensor and at least one distributed motion sensor may be included. The sensors also detect motion of the stabilized output relative to the unit. The control circuitry sends voltage commands to the motion generating elements in response to the signals to counteract the user's tremor or unintended muscle movement. This cancellation maintains and stabilizes the position of the applicator holding the applicator stable.

Those skilled in the art will appreciate that systems and methods according to the present invention may utilize various implementations of control circuits and sensor circuits and are within the spirit and scope of the present invention. In one embodiment, control circuit 715 includes an electrical system capable of generating an electrical response from sensor inputs, such as a programmable microcontroller or field programmable gate array (FPGA). In one embodiment, the control circuit includes an 8-bit ATMEGA8A programmable microcontroller manufactured by Atmel Corporation due to its low overall cost, low power consumption, and usability in high volume applications.

In one embodiment, at least one inertial sensor in the sensor circuit is a sensor including, but not limited to, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, or a combination of the two. In one embodiment, at least one distributed motion sensor in the sensor circuit is a non-contact position sensor including but not limited to a Hall-effect magnetic sensor.

A system created by a combination of sensor circuitry, control circuitry, and motion-generating elements may be a closed-loop control system, which senses motion and acceleration at various points in the system, and which is not intended by the user. It feeds detailed information into the control algorithm that moves the motion generating elements appropriately to counteract the net effect of the muscle movement and thus stabilize the position of the cosmetic applicator. The operation and details of the control system and control algorithm are well understood in the art, as described in US Pre-Registration Publication No. 2014/0052275A1, incorporated herein by reference.

The communication interface 717 may include a network controller such as a BCM43342 Wi-Fi, frequency modulation, and Bluetooth combo chip from Broadcom for interfacing with a network.

Within the connection component 621 of the applicator stabilizer unit 600 there may be two motive elements that allow three-dimensional movement of the receiver as an anti-sway movement. The two motive elements include a y-axis motive element 705 and an x-axis motive element 707, each of which is connected to and controlled by the PCBA 703. Each of the motive elements can be servo motors as understood in the art. The applicator stabilizer unit 600 further includes a connector 505 configured to mate with the adapter. Connector 505 can include a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader 709 that is configured to read an RFID tag that can be included in a cosmetic applicator.

In FIG. 8 there is shown an alternative arrangement of internal components of the applicator stabilizer unit of FIG. 6 . In FIG. 8 there is shown a diagram of an alternative embodiment of an applicator stabilizer unit 600 in which the connection component 621 comprises an electromagnetic positioner 811 instead of the motive elements shown in FIG. 7 . The electromagnetic positioner 811 may include U-shaped magnetic cores 809 arranged around a non-magnetic tube 805 filled with magnetic fluid 813 . Each of the magnetic cores includes arm portions surrounded by windings 807. The magnetic cores, controlled by a control circuit in the PCBA 703, serve as controllable active magnetic field generating structures used to generate a variable magnetic field that acts on the magnetic field to be displaced, so that the armature is positioned at desired coordinates and/or or to move in either direction. Details of the implementation of the electromagnetic positioner 811 can be found in US Pat. No. 6,553,161, incorporated herein by reference. The applicator coupling element may be configured to detachably attach the cosmetic applicator to the applicator stabilizer unit. The applicator mating element is applied via any of several types of connections including, but not limited to, bayonet couplings, friction fitting couplings, magnetic couplings, snap fitting couplings, or threaded couplings. It may be configured to detachably attach the cosmetic applicator to the group stabilizer unit.

Base portion 901 may include a pair of magnets 923 to ensure correct orientation of motion stabilization device 400 and applicator coupling element 900 . In particular, the polarization of magnets 923 can be such that magnets 403 are attracted to corresponding magnets 923 in a suitable direction. In the wrong orientation, magnets 403 are repelled by magnets 923. The magnetic force between magnets 923 and 403 is used to grip the applicator coupling element 900 to the motion stabilization device 400 . Base portion 901 has a cylindrical outer shape for easy engagement with end portion 907 . Base portion 901 may take on alternative shapes, including an hourglass shape or a tapered shape, to accommodate end 907 of a reduced or enlarged diameter.

The applicator coupling element 900 includes multiple detents to allow fine adjustment of the angle at which the applicator is positioned relative to the motion stabilization device 400 . Considering FIG. 9 , first detent 903 allows rotation 913 relative to base portion 901 . Second detent 905 allows rotation 915 relative to first detent 903 . The detents may include one or more springs to apply force to the detents. The first and second detents 903, 905 may be configured as lockable detents with a disposition of catches 931 equally spaced around the circumference of the ring. The catches 931 allow a unidirectional direction of rotation 913 . The amount of angular rotation between locking positions varies according to the number of catches 931 . If two detents 903, 905 are provided, the angle of rotation between the locked positions can be split in half, which allows for a finer degree of control. In one embodiment, the catches 931 are wedge-shaped to allow easy rotation between locking positions. In an alternative embodiment, the catches are formed as rectangular teeth that are inserted into slots of the end tooth arrangement of the corresponding component. Detents 903, 905 and base portion 901 may be made of plastic or a metal alloy such as stainless steel or aluminum.

An opening 909 in end 907 is shaped and sized to receive a cosmetic applicator including a handle. The opening 909 has a circular cross section such that the opening 909 is cylindrical. In some embodiments, opening 909 may have a rectangular cross section. To hold the cosmetic applicator in place, bumps 911 may be placed inside opening 909 . The bumps 911 may be evenly spaced in a linear arrangement around the inner circumference of the opening. One or more linear arrangements may be provided along the depth of the opening. The bumps 911 may be randomly disposed on the inner surface of the opening. End 907 may be made of a soft, compressible material such as rubber. In some embodiments, bumps 911 may be rubber. In some embodiments, bumps 911 may be positioned to accommodate cosmetic applicators of different shapes and sizes. In some embodiments, opening 909 may be tapered to a smaller cross-section relative to the mouth of opening 909 .

Similar to the applicator coupling element 900, the applicator coupling element 1000 may include a base portion that may include a shaped opening 1021 for receiving the coupling component 405 of the motion stabilization device 400. (1001). The base part 1001 may include a pair of magnets 1023 to ensure correct orientation of the motion stabilization device 400 and the adapter 1000 . The applicator coupling unit 1000 includes multiple detents to allow fine adjustment of the angle at which the cosmetic applicator is rotated relative to the central axis of the motion stabilization device 400 . Considering FIG. 10 , first detent 1003 allows rotation 1013 relative to base portion 1001 . The second detent 1005 allows rotation 1015 relative to the first detent 1003. The first and second detents 1003, 1005 may be configured as lockable detents with a disposition of catches 1031 evenly spaced around the circumference of the ring. The catches 1031 allow unidirectional orientation. In one embodiment, the catches 1031 are wedge-shaped. In an alternative embodiment, the catches are formed as rectangular teeth that are inserted into the slots of the distal tooth arrangement of the corresponding component. Detents 1003, 1005 and base portion 1001 may be made of plastic.

Opening 1009 in end 1007 is sized to receive a cosmetic applicator including a handle. To hold the cosmetic applicator in place, ribs 1011 may be placed on the inside of the opening 1009. The ribs 1011 may be evenly spaced within a circular arrangement around the inner periphery of the opening. Ribs 1011 may extend the entire depth of the opening. End 1007 may be made of a soft, compressible material such as rubber.

In some embodiments, the applicator coupling element 1300 may include multiple detents for fine adjustment of the angle of rotation of the cosmetic applicator. Considering FIG. 13 , detent 1303 allows rotation 1313 relative to base portion 1301 . Detent 1305 may be configured as a lockable detent with a disposition of catches 1331 evenly spaced around the circumference of the ring. The catches 1331 allow unidirectional orientation. In one embodiment, the catches 1331 are wedge-shaped.
