Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a sodium sulfur battery. More particularly, the present invention relates to a sodium sulfur battery that is capable of minimizing damage due to repeated thermal cycles of the battery.
Generally, a sodium-sulfur battery is developed as a large-capacity power storage battery because of its high energy density, charge / discharge efficiency, self-discharge, and irregular charge / discharge characteristics.
The sodium sulfur battery uses sodium (Na) as a negative electrode, sulfur (S) as a positive electrode, and a beta alumina ceramic of a solid electrolyte having sodium ion conductivity as an electrolyte is used in the form of a tube. The electrolyte tube is installed in a metal anode container. The inside of the electrolyte tube is filled with sodium, and the carbon felt impregnated with sulfur is filled between the electrolyte tube and the anode vessel. The sodium ion is transferred between the cathode and the anode through the beta alumina, which is an electrolytic tube, to charge and discharge the battery.
The sodium sulfur cell is operated in a high temperature environment of about 300 ° C. or higher. Accordingly, the battery is contracted and expanded due to high temperature. Here, the active material such as sodium polysulfide, sulfur, etc. in the molten state during the battery operation is solidified during the temperature lowering process to form a solid phase between the positive electrode container and the solid electrolyte tube, so that the battery does not shrink to its original size upon cooling. Therefore, when the operation and stop of the battery is repeated, the positive electrode container is gradually extended in the axial direction. Accordingly, the stress generated at this time damages the weak solid electrolyte tube, the solid electrolyte tube and the glass joint between the insulator or the joint between the insulator and the positive electrode container.
In the related art, a necking part in which a side of the positive electrode container is recessed inward is formed on the outer circumferential surface of the positive electrode container to absorb and mitigate shrinkage expansion of the positive electrode container due to high temperature.
However, when the necking portion is formed in this way, there is a problem that a thermal spray coating introduced to prevent corrosion of the anode container from sodium polysulfide or sulfur cannot be applied in the vicinity of the necking portion.
In addition, as the heat cycle of the battery is repeated, deformation may be continuously generated in the necking part, thereby causing a problem of leakage of the active material due to cracking.
In addition, when the positive electrode container is made of stainless steel having excellent heat resistance, even if the necking part is formed in the positive electrode container, it is difficult to expect the effect of reducing the stress caused by the necking part.
Thus, there is provided a sodium sulfur battery which can relieve the stress caused by the thermal cycle of driving the battery.
In addition, the present invention provides a sodium sulfur battery which can minimize damage to components of a battery including a positive electrode container by a thermal cycle caused by battery operation.
To this end, the present sodium sulfur battery includes a positive electrode container containing a positive electrode active material containing sulfur, a negative electrode container containing a negative electrode active material containing sodium, and an electrolyte provided between the positive electrode container and the negative electrode container to selectively move only sodium ions. An insulator that insulates the cathode vessel and the anode vessel between the tube, the cathode vessel and the anode vessel, and is installed between the cathode active material and the anode vessel inside the anode vessel and absorbs the stress due to the difference in shrinkage between the anode vessel and the cathode active material. It may include.
The buffer member may be made of a corrosion resistant material for sodium polysulfide.
The buffer member may be made of a Fe-Cr based alloy.
The buffer member may include a tube body disposed on an inner circumferential surface of the positive electrode container and extending along the positive electrode container, and a wrinkle formed in at least part of the tube body.
The corrugations may be folded along the axial direction of the tubular body and continuously formed along the circumference of the tubular body.
The corrugation may be formed on the upper side of the tube toward the insulator.
The tube may be joined to a metal bracket provided between the cathode container and the insulator.
The positive electrode container may be made of a heat resistant material including stainless steel or carbon steel.
As described above, according to the present embodiment, the stress applied to the positive electrode container during the solidification of the positive electrode active material is absorbed as the wrinkles of the tube are stretched and contracted and the positive electrode container can be smoothly expanded and expanded.
As a result, damage to the cathode container and damage to internal components of the battery due to repeated thermal cycles of the battery may be minimized.
In addition, it is not necessary to form the necking portion in the positive electrode container, it is easier to manufacture the positive electrode container, it is possible to further increase the durability by forming a spray coating as a whole.
In addition, since the stress applied to the positive electrode container can be minimized, the positive electrode container can be made of stainless steel or carbon steel having excellent heat resistance.

1 shows a sodium sulfur battery according to this embodiment.
Referring to FIG. 1, the sodium sulfur
The
The
The
A safety tube (not shown) may be further installed between the
An
With the above structure, the present sodium sulfur
Here, the
To this end, the
The shock absorbing member includes a
The
Since the
In this embodiment, the
The
The
In the present embodiment, the
As described above, the
That is, the positive electrode active material is melted and the
In the conventional structure, the
However, the
As such, by arranging the
2 is a graph showing the results of comparative measurements of the deformation amount of the battery of the present example with a battery of a conventional structure.
The battery of this embodiment used in the experiment is provided with a
The battery of the conventional structure compared with the battery of this embodiment is a structure in which the
In this experiment, the stress generated during the temperature reduction process of the sodium sulfur battery was measured through the amount of deformation of the positive electrode container (14).
As a result of the experiment, as shown in FIG. 2, in the case of the embodiment provided with the
This is because in the present embodiment, the stress applied to the
