Abstract

A package for containing and dispensing wipes is disclosed. The package includes a first compartment, shaped like a wallet and separated from the second compartment along a foldable seam. The present invention is one of Continuation-in-Part and is a priority application of US Patent Serial No. 11 / 513,498, filed August 31, 2006.

Many different types of disposable wiping products are currently available on the market. Such wiping products include, for example, facial tissues, toilet tissues, paper towels, napkins and the like. Not only dry products these days, but also moisture-saturated wiping products or pre-moistened wiping products are also gaining popularity.

Moisture-saturated wiping products or preliminary moisturizing wiping products are used for a variety of different applications such as wiping and rubbing. For example, preliminary moisturizing wipes are baby wipes which are usually sold with a stack of individually folded sheets encased in a plastic container. In other applications, the wipes are treated with antimicrobial agents and packaged in hygienic wipers.

Preliminary moisturizing wipes are also prepared to contain disinfectants and / or cleaning ingredients. In this application, the preliminary moisturizing wipes are used to clean and disinfect adjacent surfaces, such as countertops, floors and toilet surfaces.

The preliminary moisturizing product is also configured to decompose when placed in water for a long time. These products are sold as "flushable" in standard toilets. Such preliminary moisturizing wipes are gaining popularity as a replacement for dry toilet tissue.

Wiping products such as those described above are packaged in many different formats. For example, the wiping product may be packaged in a container made of plastic or cardboard. The package may be formed with a relatively large number of wipes, or in the case of some preliminary moisturizing wipes, may contain only one wipe. There is also a need for a package containing a relatively small amount of wipes for personal use. For example, in some applications there is a need for a package for preliminary moisturizing wipes that an individual can carry individually. For example, such a package may be very suitable to hold a preliminary moisturizing wipe, especially for flush toilets.

Disclosed herein generally relates to a package for containing a wipe. For example, in one embodiment, the package includes a first compartment containing a first product and a second compartment containing a second product. The length and width of the second compartment may be substantially similar to the length and width of the first compartment.

The first compartment may be connected to the second compartment along a foldable seam. In particular, the first compartment may be folded over the second compartment around the seam. In the folded form the inner surface of the first compartment faces the inner surface of the second compartment.

A first opening may be located on the inner surface of the first compartment to wipe the wipe out of it and the second opening may be located on the inner surface of the second compartment so that the wipe may be removed from it.

The size and shape of the package may vary depending on the particular application, but in one embodiment the length and width of each compartment may be between about 5.08 cm (2 inches) and about 15.24 cm (6 inches).

Any suitable product may be embedded in the first compartment or the second compartment. In this regard, the openings associated with each compartment may vary depending upon the particular type of product embedded within the compartment. In one embodiment, for example, the first article and the second article may comprise at least one wipe, such as a wipe stack. The wiping product may be, for example, facial tissue, toilet tissue, and the like. The product embedded in the first compartment may be the same product or a different product than the product embedded in the second compartment. In alternative embodiments, each opening may be covered with a polymeric member forming a slit. The polymer member may be configured such that the slit forms an opening when compressed in a direction generally parallel to the slit.

In other embodiments, each opening may comprise a first side and a second side. The first surface may be surrounded by a groove, and the second surface may be surrounded by a ridge portion. The groove and the ridge portion may form a structure to be engaged. In this embodiment, there may be a closing member to facilitate the mechanical engagement between the groove and the ridge portion. In particular, the closing member may function as a zipper forcing the two structures to approach the slide while sliding along the groove and the ridge portion. Alternatively, the grooves and ridges may be closed as the fingers slide along the openings.

In another embodiment, the first opening and the second opening may be located on the first compartment and the second compartment such that they overlap when the package is folded. The package may include a sealing member sealing the first opening to the second opening when the package is folded. For example, the sealing member may include a female portion disposed close to the first opening portion and a male portion disposed close to the second opening portion. When the package is folded, the female part may form a structure that is engaged with the male part. In another embodiment, one or more of the openings may include an open end of the compartment for the product to be taken out. For example, the open end may be accessible from the interior surface of the compartment and may face the seam. Compartments with open ends are particularly well suited to holding dry wipes, for example facial tissues and the like.

In another embodiment, one of the openings in the compartment may initially be closed by a fragile seal. The brittle seal can be configured to be opened by the user to reveal the product therein. Examples of brittle seals that may be used herein are disclosed in US Pat. No. 5,616,337, US Pat. No. 6,705,541 and PCT Publication WO 02/42176, which are incorporated herein by reference. A brittle seal generally refers to a seal that cannot be resealed once opened by the user. Compartments with brittle seals are particularly suitable for holding moisturizing products, liquid products and semi-solid products.

The various types of openings described above can be used with each other as needed. For example, in one embodiment the first compartment may have an open end, and the second compartment may have a resealable opening or an opening that is closed by a brittle seal.

In another embodiment, the package may include a third compartment. The third compartment may be, for example, on an inner surface of the first compartment or on an inner surface of the second compartment. The third compartment may be configured to hold a third product, and may have any suitable opening described above. For example, in one embodiment the third compartment may have an open end.

The package can be made of any suitable material. For example, in one embodiment, the package can be made of a polymer film material. The polymer film material may include a multilayer polymer film. For example, the polymer film may include a sealable layer facing the wipe in the compartment and an opposite outer layer. Optionally, there may be a core layer disposed between the sealable layer and the outer layer. The core layer may be more rigid than the sealable and outer layers to support the product.

The sealable layer can be made of any suitable thermoplastic polymer that can be melted, for example, by applying heat or ultrasonic energy. The sealable layer can be made of, for example, polyolefin polymer, polyolefin copolymer or ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer. Disclosed herein also relates to a method of producing a package for a consumable product. The method may include positioning a first product, such as a wipe stack, over a first portion of the blank and positioning a second product, such as a second wipe stack, over a second portion of the blank. The present application generally relates to a package for containing a consumable product, such as a wipe. The package may, for example, contain two compartments, each containing a different product, such as a separate wipe stack. The number of sheets embedded in the first stack 42 and / or the second stack 44 may vary significantly depending on the particular application. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the openings 26, 28 can be made resealable by placing the resealing mechanism over the openings.
