Abstract

A component such as a piston ring is provided to detect defect of parts promptly and accurately without errors in repairing by using a bar code or text as the marking, and to cut down cost by extending the life span of the marking. A piston ring(10) is formed in an internal combustion engine, and marking is formed in a surface of the piston ring for discriminating parts. The piston ring includes an upper edge, a lower edge, an outer edge(13) and an inner edge(14). The marking is formed in the inner edge reducing load and wear, and the inner edge is composed of a region for deciding the inner diameter of the piston ring and other regions chamfered. The marking is arranged in the regions of the inner edge, and the part is identified after disassembling the piston ring in repairing owing to leaving the marking in the inner edge. The marking of the piston ring includes a bar code and text containing information on the piston ring.
