PURPOSE: An operation control method of a universal exhaust gas oxygen sensor is provided to prevent crack of the sensor in heating the oxygen sensor suddenly and lowering of durability by warming the oxygen sensor up with exhaust gas and actuating the heater of the universal exhaust gas oxygen sensor. CONSTITUTION: An engine control unit detects starting of an engine, and a coolant temperature sensor detects and inputs coolant temperature to the engine control unit(S1,S2). The engine control unit decides the delay time according to the temperature of coolant detected from the coolant temperature sensor(S3). The engine control unit controls current with the pulse width modulation method after the predetermined delay time, and heats the universal exhaust oxygen sensor by supplying current to the heater of the universal exhaust oxygen sensor(S4).
