Abstract

리모트 컨트롤 유닛상에 확장 콘텐트 정보를 디스플레이하는 장치 및 방법{DISPLAYING ENHANCED CONTENT INFORMATION ON A REMOTE CONTROL UNIT}
종래 텔레비전 수신기는 리모트 컨트롤 유닛에 의해 제어될 수 있다. 이 리모트 컨트롤 유닛은 유선 또는 무선 커넥션에 의해 텔레비전 수신기와 통신할 수 잇다. 예를 들어, 무선 주파수 또는 적외선 무선 커넥션이 사용될 수 있다.
또한 사용자는 종래 텔레비전 수신기와 관련하여 동작하는 컴퓨터 시스템을 원격 제어하기를 원할 수도 있다. 종종 셋톱 컴퓨터 시스템으로 불리는 컴퓨터 시스템은 특정 실시예에서 상대적으로 작은 크기일 수 있고 텔레비전 수신기의 상부에 위치될 수 있다. 리모트 컨트롤 유닛은 관련된 텔레비전 수신기를 차례로 제어하는 셋톱 컴퓨터 시스템을 제어할 수 있다.

따라서, 로컬 식별자는 식별자(25) 정보에 반복적으로 액세스하도록 사용될 수 있다. 일단 식별자(25)가 시스템(12)내에 저장되고 로컬 식별자를 통해 식별된다면, 로컬 식별자는 반복적으로 호출될 수 있고 반복해서 사용될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 본 발명의 일실시예에서, 이미지가 실제로 필요하기 전에 시스템(12)에 이러한 아이콘 이미지를 식별하는 복수의 콘텐트가 로딩될 수 있다. 이러한 아이콘중 하나에 대한 아이콘 코드는 이미 수신기상에서 아이콘을 식별하는 어나운스먼트 스트림과 함께 전송될 수 있다. 로컬 식별자 또는 URL은 트리거의 일부로서 전송될수 있다. 트리거는 확장 텔레비전 프로그램에 대해 배달되는 실시간 이벤트이다. 수신기는 사용자가 확장 텔레비전 콘텐트를 에이블링하거나 디스에이블링할 수 있도록 자체 정책을 설정하고 트리거는 확장 콘텐트 유연성을 사용자에게 공지하는 신호로서 사용될 수 있다. 트리거는 일반적으로 URL을 포함하고 또한 선택적으로 인간 판독가능 네임, 종료 데이트 및 스크립트를 포함할 수 있다. 콘텐트의 특정 타입의 도착을 알리도록 사용되는 트리거와 관련된 종료 데이트는 아이콘의 디스플레이의 한정된 지속시간을 제공할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일실시예에 따라, 어나운스먼트 스트림은 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(18)의 디스플레이(22)상에 디스플레이된 이미지상에 투명한 오버레이가 생성되도록 하는 스크립트를 포함할 수 있다. 투명한 오버레이는 확장 텔레비전 콘텐트를 따르는 콘텐트를 식별하는 하나 이상의 아이콘 또는 식별자(25)를 포함할 수 있다.
아이콘 로케이터가 구문 해석된 후에, 아이콘 정보는 도 2내 블록(144)에서 나타낸 바와 같이, 2개의 예로서 인터넷으로부터 또는 로컬 시스템으로부터 액세스될 수 있다. 그후에, 하나 이상의 아이콘은 리모트 컨트롤 유닛상에 디스플레이된다.
이러한 방법으로, 비디오 정보가 수신되고 확장 데이터가 비디오 콘텐트로부터 구문 해석된 후에, 아이콘 로케이터는 더 구문 해석될 수 있고 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(18)으로 전송될 수 있다. 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(18)에 의해 수신되자 마자, 아이콘은 디스플레이될 수 있다. 본 발명의 일실시예에서, 아이콘은 사용자가 확장 콘텐트의 시청을 선택할 수 있도록 하는 아이콘일 수 있다. 본 발명의 또 다른 실시예에서, 아이콘은 광고성 정보를 제공할 수 있다.
일단 아이콘이 도 2내의 판정블록(146)내에 나타낸 바와 같이 수신되었다면, 아이콘은 블록(148)에 나타낸 바와 같이 스크린(22)상에 디스플레이되기 위해 리모크 컨트롤 유닛(18)에 전송될 수 있다. 본 발명의 특정 실시예에서, 사용자는 스크린(22)상에 디스플레이되기 위해 스트림으로부터 구문 해석되고, 식별되고 전송될 수 있는 아이템을 선택할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 광고성 정보를 포함하는 어나운스먼트는 구문 해석되어 디스플레이(22)에 전송되거나 전송될 수 없는 코드를 포함할 수 있다. 텔레비전 프로그램과 함께 유용한 일반적인 부수적인 정보에 관한 정보는 별도의 구문 해석과 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(18)으로의 선택적인 전송을 위해 유사하게 코딩될 수 있다.
또한, 주변기의 상태에 관한 정보가 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(18)상에 디스플레이될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 디지털 비디오 디스크 플레이어(14), 비디오 카세트 레코더(14) 및 콤팩트 디스크 플레이어(20)와 같은 비디오 재생 디바이스의 상태가 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(22)상에 디스플레이될 수 있다. 따라서, 이러한 디바이스의 현 상태에 대한 상태 정보는 디스플레이(17)상에 진행중인 비디오 콘텐트의 디스플레이를 방해하는 일 없이 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(18)을 통해 유용하다.
또한, 리모트 컨트롤 유닛(18)은 호출자 식별 번호를 포함하여 입중계 전화 호출 또는 입중계 이메일에 관한 정보를 제공할 수 있다.
도 3에서, RCU(18)는 본 발명의 일실시예에서 액정 디스플레이일 수 있는 디스플레이(22)를 포함할 수 있다. 컨트롤러(26)는 메모리(39)에 연결될 수 있고 RF송수신기(30)는 물론 디스플레이(22)를 제어할 수 있다. 컨트롤러(26)는 프로세서에 기초한 것일 수 있고 예를 들어, 마이크로컨트롤러 또는 마이크로프로세서일 수 있다. RF 송수신기(30)는 무선 주파수 음성 정보를 시스템(12)에 보낼 수 있다. 본 발명의 일실시예에서, 송수신기(30)는 RCU(18)내에 장착될 수 있는 내부 안테나(29)를 사용한다. IR 송수신기(28)는 본 발명의 일실시예에서 IrDA-C 프로토콜과 같은 쌍방향 적외선 프로토콜을 사용하여 시스템(12)과 통신하도록 사용될 수 있다. IR 전송기(35)는 본 발명의 일실시예에서 쌍방향 프로토콜을 사용하여 종래의 디바이스와 통신하도록 사용될 수 있다.
또한 컨트롤러(26)는 사용자 입력 명령을 허용하는 키패드(24)를 제어할 수 있다. 마이크로폰(36) 및 스피커(38)는 추가 기능을 할 수 있다. 클록(37) 및 재충전기(43)를 구비한 배터리 전원(41)이 또한 제공될 수 있다.
도 4에서, 위에서 설명된 능력을 제공하는 시스템의 예는 컴퓨터, 텔레비전 수신기, 셋톱 컴퓨터 시스템 또는 또다른 어플라이언스중 하나를 포함할 수 있다. 도시된 시스템(12)은 액셀레이티드 그래픽스 포트(AGP) 칩셋(102)에 연결된 프로세서(100)를 포함한다. AGP는 1998년에 캘리포니아 산타 클라라의 인테 코퍼레이션에 의해 발행된 Accelerated Graphics Port Interface Specification, revision 2.0에 상세하게 설명되었다.

SIO 디바이스(122)는 마우스(126)와 키보드(128), 그리고 시스템(12)을 RCU(18)에 연결하는 RF 인터페이스(132) 및 IR 인터페이스(130)에 인터페이스할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 적외선 인터페이스(130)는 예를 들어, 1997년 11월 30일자의 Serial Infrared Physical Layer Link Specification, version 1.2와 같은 Infrared Data Association protocols에 따를 수 있다. RF 인터페이스(132)는 RCU(18)와의 RF 통신을 위해 안테나에 연결될 수 있다. 또한 버스(115)는 전화선에 연결될 수 있는 음성 모뎀을 포함할 수 있는 네트워크 인터페이스에 연결될 수 있다.
여기에 설명된 그래픽 사용자 인터페이스는 메모리 상태를 가시적으로 나타낸다. 디스플레이(22)상에 디스플레이되는 그래픽 사용자 인터페이스는 하나 이상의 메모리(104 또는 116)와 같은 메모리내에 저장될 수 있다.
본 발명이 제한된 수의 실시예에 관하여 설명되었지만, 당업자는 그로부터 수많은 수정 및 변형을 이해할 것이다. 첨부된 청구항은 본 발명의 진정한 정신 및 범위내에서 그러한 수정 및 변형을 포함하도록 의도되었다.

Claims (20)

  1. 비디오 정보와 함께 확장 콘텐트를 비디오 수신기에 제공하는 단계; 및
    상기 비디오 수신기용 리모트 컨트롤 유닛용 디스플레이상에 상기 확장 콘텐트에 관한 정보를 디스플레이하는 단계;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  2. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 정보를 디스플레이하는 단계는 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛용 디스플레이상에 광고성 정보를 디스플레이하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  3. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 정보를 디스플레이하는 방법은 상기 비디오 수신기상에서 현재 시청되고 있는 텔레비전 프로그램에 관한 정보를 디스플레이하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  4. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 확장 콘텐트에 관한 정보의 디스플레이에 응답하는 상기 사용자로부터 정보를 수신하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  5. 제 4 항에 있어서, 상기 정보를 수신하는 단계는 제품을 구매하는 요구를 수신하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  6. 제 1 항에 있어서, 비디오 재생 디바이스에 관한 정보를 디스플레이하는 단계를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  7. 제 6 항에 있어서, 디지털 다기능 디스크 플레이어에 관한 정보를 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛상에 디스플레이하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  8. 제 7 항에 있어서, 비디오 카세트 레코더에 관한 정보를 디스플레이하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  9. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 비디오 정보로부터 확장 콘텐트를 구문 해석하고 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛용 상기 디스플레이상에 상기 확장 콘텐트의 일부를 선택적으로 디스플레이하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
  10. 프로세서에 기초한 시스템이
    상기 프로세서에 기초한 시스템에 비디오 정보와 함께 확장 콘텐트를 제공하고,
    상기 프로세서에 기초한 시스템용 리모트 컨트롤 유닛용 디스플레이상에 상기 확장 콘텐트에 관한 정보를 디스플레이하도록 하는 명령을 저장하는 매체를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 아티클.
  11. 제 10 항에 있어서, 프로세서에 기초한 시스템이 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛용 디스플레이상에 광고성 정보를 디스플레이하도록 하는 명령을 더 저장하는 것을 특징으로 하는 아티클.
  12. 제 10 항에 있어서, 프로세서에 기초한 시스템이 상기 프로세서에 기초한 시스템 상에서 현재 시청되고 있는 텔레비전 프로그램에 관한 정보를 디스플레이하도록 하는 명령을 더 저장하는 것을 특징으로 하는 아티클.
  13. 제 10 항에 있어서, 프로세서에 기초한 시스템이 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛 상의 상기 확장 콘텐트에 관한 정보의 디스플레이에 응답하는 사용자로부터 정보를 수신하도록 하는 명령을 더 저장하는 것을 특징으로 하는 아티클.
  14. 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템용 리모트 컨트롤 유닛에 있어서,
    프로세서;
    상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템과 통신하는 인터페이스; 및
    상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템으로부터 수신된 확장 콘텐트 정보를 디스플레이하는 디스플레이;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리모트 컨트롤 유닛.
  15. 제 14 항에 있어서, 상기 인터페이스는 무선 인터페이스인 것을 특징으로 하는 리모트 컨트롤 유닛.
  16. 제 14 항에 있어서, 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛은 광고성 정보를 디스플레이하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리모트 컨트롤 유닛.
  17. 제 14 항에 있어서, 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛은 상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템상에 확장 콘텐트의 가용성에 관한 정보를 디스플레이하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리모트 컨트롤 유닛.
  18. 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템;
    리모트 컨트롤 유닛;
    상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛과 상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템 사이의 인터페이스; 및
    상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템과 관련된 디스플레이와 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛과 관련된 디스플레이;를 포함하고, 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛은 상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템과 관련된 상기 디스플레이상에서 시청되는 확장 콘텐트의 가용성에 관한, 상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템으로부터 수신된 정보를 디스플레이하는 것을 특징으로 하는 시스템.
  19. 제 18 항에 있어서, 상기 인터페이스는 무선 인터페이스인 것을 특징으로 하는 시스템.
  20. 제 19 항에 있어서, 상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템은 상기 리모트 컨트롤 유닛과 관련된 상기 디스플레이에 의해 디스플레이하기 위해 상기 호스트 프로세서에 기초한 시스템에 유용한 확장 콘텐트 정보에 관한 정보를 선택적으로 전송하는 것을 특징으로 하는 시스템.
