본 발명은 전계 방출 표시장치 및 그 제조방법에 관한 것으로서, 보다 상세하게는 애노드 전극 위에 절연막을 형성하는 것에 의하여 애노드 전극에 인가되는 고전압이 누설되는 것을 방지한 전계 방출 표시장치 및 그 제조방법에 관한 것이다.
일반적으로 전계 방출 표시장치(FED;Field Emission Display)는 양자역학적인 터널링 효과를 이용하여 캐소드 전극에 형성된 에미터로부터 전자를 방출시키고, 방출된 전자를 애노드 전극에 형성된 형광막에 충돌시켜 발광시키는 것에 의하여 소정의 영상을 구현하는 평판 표시장치로서, 캐소드 전극과 게이트 전극 및 애노드 전극으로 이루어지는 3극관 구조가 널리 사용되고 있다.
종래 3극관 구조의 전계 방출 표시장치는 제1기판 상에 다수의 캐소드 전극을 소정의 간격으로 스트라이프 패턴으로 형성하고, 캐소드 전극 위에 절연층을 형성한 다음, 절연층 위에 캐소드 전극과 직교하는 스트라이프 패턴으로 게이트 전극을 형성하고, 캐소드 전극과 게이트 전극이 교차하는 부분의 절연층과 게이트 전극 일부를 제거하고 이 부분에 캐소드 전극과 연결되도록 에미터를 형성하고, 제2기판 상에 애노드 전극을 형성하고, 애노드 전극 위에 블랙매트릭스막을 사이에 두고 적색(R)과 녹색(G) 및 청색(B)의 형광막을 교대로 배열 형성하여 이루어진다.
상기와 같이 구성되는 전계 방출 표시장치는 캐소드 전극과 게이트 전극에 소정의 구동전압을 인가하고, 애노드 전극에 3∼5KV의 (+)전압을 인가하면, 캐소드 전극과 게이트 전극의 전압 차에 의해 에미터 주위에 전계가 형성되며 이에 의하여 전자가 방출되고, 방출된 전자가 고전압이 인가된 애노드 전극쪽으로 이동하여 대응하는 형광막에 충돌 발광시키는 것에 의하여 소정의 영상 표시가 이루어진다.
그런데 종래 전계 방출 표시장치에 있어서는 초기 에이징(aging) 및 일정 시 간을 사용한 후에도, 제1기판 및 제2기판 사이의 모서리(edge)부를 중심으로 크롬(Cr)이나 알루미늄(Al) 등 도전체성 잔사 또는 입자(particle) 등에 의해, 애노드 전극에 인가되는 고압이 누설되어 구동부에 손상을 줄뿐만 아니라 각 전극별로 설정된 전압을 인가할 수 없게 하는 요인으로 된다. 즉 상기 애노드 전극에는 수KV의 고압을 인가하므로, 애노드 전극과 게이트 전극 사이에 약간의 도전체가 있는 경우에도 애노드 전극과 다른 전극(게이트 전극 및 캐소드 전극 등)과의 전위차에 의해 전압이 유기(누설)되거나 방전될 가능성은 매우 높으며, 실제로 이러한 현상이 많이 발생하고 있다.
본 발명의 목적은 상기와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위한 것으로서, 애노드 전극 위에 절연막을 형성하는 것에 의하여 애노드 전극에 인가되는 고전압이 누설되거나 방전되어 구동부나 다른 전극에 손상을 주는 것을 방지한 전계 방출 표시장치를 제공하기 위한 것이다.
본 발명의 다른 목적은 애노드 전극과 형광막을 형성한 다음에 절연막을 추가로 형성하는 것에 의하여 애노드 전극에 인가되는 고전압이 누설되는 것을 방지한 전계 방출 표시장치 제조방법을 제공하기 위한 것이다.
본 발명이 제안하는 전계 방출 표시장치는 소정의 간격을 두고 대향 배치되는 제1기판 및 제2기판과, 상기 제1기판 상에서 절연층을 사이에 두고 서로 교차하는 패턴으로 형성되는 다수의 게이트 전극 및 캐소드 전극과, 상기 캐소드 전극 위 에 형성되는 다수의 에미터와, 상기 제2기판 상에 형성되는 애노드 전극과, 상기 애노드 전극의 일면에 소정의 패턴으로 형성되는 형광막과, 화상이 구현되지 않는 비유효부의 상기 애노드 전극 위에 형성되는 절연막을 포함하여 이루어진다.
또 본 발명이 제안하는 전계 방출 표시장치 제조방법은 제2기판에 도전성 물질을 도포하여 애노드 전극을 형성하고, 애노드 전극 위에 녹색(G), 청색(B), 적색(R)의 형광체 및 블랙매트릭스(BM)를 차례로 소정의 패턴으로 도포하여 형광막을 형성하고, 화상이 구현되지 않는 비유효부의 애노드 전극 위에 절연물질을 도포하여 절연막을 형성하는 과정을 포함하여 이루어진다.
다음으로 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치의 바람직한 실시예를 도면을 참조하여 상세하게 설명한다.
먼저 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치의 제1실시예는 도 1∼도 2에 나타낸 바와 같이, 소정의 간격을 두고 대향 배치되는 제1기판(20) 및 제2기판(22)과, 상기 제1기판(20) 상에 소정의 간격으로 형성되는 다수의 게이트 전극(24)과, 절연층(26)을 사이에 두고 상기 게이트 전극(24) 위에 교차하는 패턴으로 형성되는 다수의 캐소드 전극(26)과, 상기 캐소드 전극(26) 위에 형성되는 다수의 에미터(28)와, 상기 제2기판(22) 상에 형성되는 애노드 전극(32)과, 상기 애노드 전극(32)의 일면에 소정의 패턴으로 형성되는 형광막(34)과, 화상이 구현되지 않는 비유효부의 상기 애노드 전극(30) 위에 형성되는 절연막(50)을 포함을 포함하여 이루어진다.
그리고 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치의 제1실시예는 도 1 및 도 2에 나타낸 바와 같이, 상기 제1기판(20)과 제2기판(22) 사이에 설치되고 다수의 빔통 과공(42)이 상기 에미터(28)에 대응되는 소정의 패턴으로 배열되어 형성되는 그리드 플레이트(40)를 설치하는 것도 가능하다.
상기 그리드 플레이트(40)는 상기 에미터(28)에서 방출되는 전자빔의 집속 성능을 높이는 역할을 하며, 다수의 빔통과공(42)이 소정의 간격으로 형성된 메시(mesh)형태로 이루어진다.
상기 게이트 전극(24) 및 캐소드 전극(26)은 스트라이프 패턴으로 형성하며, 서로 직교하는 방향으로 배열하여 형성한다. 예를 들면 상기 캐소드 전극(26)은 도 1의 Y축 방향을 따라 스트라이프 패턴으로 형성하고, 상기 게이트 전극(24)은 도 1의 X축 방향을 따라 스트라이프 패턴으로 형성한다.
상기 게이트 전극(24) 및 캐소드 전극(26)의 사이에는 제1기판(20)의 전체 면적에 걸쳐서 절연층(25)을 형성한다.
상기 게이트 전극(24)과 캐소드 전극(26)이 교차하는 영역마다 캐소드 전극(26)과 전기적으로 연결되도록 전자 방출원인 에미터(28)를 형성한다.
상기 에미터(28)는 균일한 두께로 형성되는 면전자원으로서, 대략 10∼100V정도의 저전압 구동조건에서 전자를 양호하게 방출하는 카본계 물질을 이용하여 형성한다. 상기 에미터(28)를 형성하는 카본계 물질로는 그라파이트(graphite), 다이아몬드, 다이아몬드상 카본(DLC;Diamond Liked Carbon), 카본 나노튜브(CNT;Carbon Nanotube), C60(fulleren) 등에서 선정하여 단독으로 또는 2종 이상을 조합하여 사용 가능하다. 특히 카본 나노튜브는 끝단의 곡률 반경이 수∼ 수십nm 정도로 극히 미세하여 1∼10V/㎛ 정도의 낮은 전계에서도 전자를 양호하게 방출하므로 이상적인 전자 방출원으로 알려져 있다.
상기 에미터(28)는 도면에 나타내지 않았지만, 웨지(wedge)형이나 콘(cone)형, 박막필름에지(thin film edge)형 등 다양한 형상으로 형성하는 것이 가능하다.
상기 제2기판(22)에 형성되는 애노드 전극(32)은 ITO 등과 같이 광투과율이 우수한 투명전극으로 형성한다.
상기 제2기판(22)에 형성되는 형광막(34)은 도 1에 나타낸 바와 같이, 게이트 전극(24) 방향(도 1에서 X축 방향)을 따라 적색(R) 형광막(34R), 녹색(G) 형광막(34G), 청색(B) 형광막(34B)을 소정의 간격을 두고 차례로 교대로 배열하여 이루어진다.
또 상기 각각의 형광막(34R), (34G), (34B) 사이에는 콘트라스트 향상을 위하여 블랙매트릭스막(35)을 형성한다.
상기와 같이 구성되는 제1기판(20)과 제2기판(22)은 캐소드 전극(26)과 형광막(34)이 직교하도록 마주한 상태에서 소정의 간격을 두고 실링물질인 밀봉재(21)에 의해 접합되며, 그 사이에 형성되는 내부 공간은 배기시켜 진공상태를 유지한다.
또 제1기판(20)과 제2기판(22)의 간격을 일정하게 유지시키기 위하여 스페이서(38)를 제1기판(20)과 제2기판(22)의 사이에 소정의 간격으로 배열하여 설치한다. 상기 스페이서(38)는 화소의 위치 및 전자빔의 경로를 피하여 설치하는 것이 바람직하다. 상기 스페이서(38)는 상기 제1기판(20)과 제2기판(22) 사이에 설치되 는 그리드 플레이트(40)를 지지하는 역할도 담당한다.
상기 절연막(50)은 도 2 및 도 3에 나타낸 바와 같이, 애노드 전극(32) 및 형광막(34)의 화상이 구현되지 않는 비유효부인 모서리부분부터 제2기판(22)의 모서리까지 덮도록 형성한다.
상기와 같이 절연막(50)을 형성하는 것에 의하여 주로 애노드 전극(32)의 에지(edge)부의 각종 도전체성 잔사나 입자에 의해 발생되는 방전현상을 방지하는 것이 가능하다.
그리고 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치의 다른 실시예는 도 4에 나타낸 바와 같이, 상기 형광막(34)과 블랙매트릭스막(35) 위에 알루미늄 등의 도전성 금속으로 이루어지는 금속박막층(36)을 더 형성한다.
상기 금속박막층(36)은 내전압특성과 휘도향상에 도움을 준다.
또한 상기 형광막(34)과 블랙매트릭스막(35)을 제2기판(22)에 직접 형성하고, 그 위에 금속박막층(36)을 형성하여 고전압을 인가하여 애노드 전극으로 기능하도록 구성하는 것도 가능하다. 이 경우에는 투명전극으로 제2기판(22) 상에 애노드 전극(32)을 형성하는 것에 비하여 높은 전압을 수용할 수 있으므로 화면의 휘도향상에 유리하다.
상기와 같이 금속박막층(36)을 형성하는 경우에는 금속박막층(36) 위에 절연막(50)을 형성한다.
상기한 다른 실시예에 있어서도 상기한 일실시예와 마찬가지의 방법으로 절연막(50)을 형성하는 것이 가능하므로 상세한 설명은 생략한다.
다음으로 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치 제조방법의 일실시예를 도 5를 참조하여 설명한다.
본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치 제조방법의 일실시예는 제2기판(22)에 도전성 물질을 도포하여 애노드 전극(32)을 형성하고(P10), 애노드 전극(32) 위에 녹색(G), 청색(B), 적색(R)의 형광체 및 블랙매트릭스(BM)를 차례로 소정의 패턴으로 도포하여 형광막(34)을 형성하고(P20), 화상이 구현되지 않는 비유효부의 애노드 전극(32) 위에 절연물질을 도포하여 절연막(50)을 형성(P30)하는 과정을 포함하여 이루어진다.
상기에서 애노드 전극(32)을 형성하는 과정(P10)은 도전성 물질인 크롬(Cr)을 스퍼터링(sputtering)하는 것으로 이루어지는 것도 가능하고, ITO 박막을 형성하는 과정으로 이루어지는 것도 가능하다.
상기 절연막(50)을 형성하는 과정(P30)은 페이스트(paste) 형태의 절연물질을 인쇄법 등을 이용하여 도포하는 것으로 이루어진다.
다음으로 상기와 같이 구성되는 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치의 작동과정을 설명한다.
먼저 외부로부터 게이트 전극(24), 캐소드 전극(26), 그리드 플레이트(40), 애노드 전극(32)에 소정의 전압을 인가하여 구동시킨다. 이 때 각 전극에 인가하는 전압은 예를 들면 게이트 전극(24)에는 수∼수십V의 (+)전압, 캐소드 전극(26)에는 수∼수십V의 (-)전압, 그리드 플레이트(40)에는 수십∼수백V의 (+)전압, 애노드 전극(32)에는 수백∼수천V의 (+)전압으로 설정한다.
상기와 같이 각 전극에 전압이 인가되면, 게이트 전극(24)과 캐소드 전극(26) 사이의 전압 차에 의하여 에미터(28) 주위에 전계가 형성되어 에미터(28)로부터 전자가 방출되고, 방출된 전자는 그리드 플레이트(40)에 인가된 (+)전압에 이끌려 제2기판(22)쪽으로 향하면서 그리드 플레이트(40)의 빔통과공(42)을 통과한 다음, 애노드 전극(32)에 인가된 고전압에 이끌려 해당 화소의 형광막(34)에 충돌하여 발광시키는 것에 의하여 소정의 영상을 구현한다.
상기에서는 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치 및 그 제조방법의 바람직한 실시예에 대하여 설명하였지만, 본 발명은 이에 한정되는 것이 아니고 특허청구범위와 발명의 상세한 설명 및 첨부한 도면의 범위 안에서 여러가지로 변형하여 실시하는 것이 가능하고, 이 또한 본 발명의 범위에 속한다.
상기와 같이 이루어지는 본 발명에 따른 전계 방출 표시장치 및 그 제조방법에 의하면, 제조공정중에 알루미늄(Al)이나 크롬(Cr) 등의 도전체성 잔사나 입자가 잔류할 우려가 높은 애노드 전극의 모서리부분에 절연막을 형성하므로, 애노드 전극에 인가되는 고전압의 방전이나 누설의 발생을 최소화하는 것이 가능하고, 양호한 에이징(aging) 및 안정적인 구동 조건을 확보하는 것이 가능하다.
또 애노드 전극과 그리드 플레이트 또는 캐소드 전극 사이의 절연이 강화되므로 최적은 전압을 인가하는 것이 가능하고, 표시 품위를 향상시키는 것이 가능하다.
Claims (6)
- 소정의 간격을 두고 대향 배치되는 제1기판 및 제2기판과,상기 제1기판 상에서 절연층을 사이에 두고 서로 교차하는 패턴으로 형성되는 다수의 게이트 전극 및 캐소드 전극과,상기 캐소드 전극 위에 형성되는 다수의 에미터와,상기 제2기판 상에 형성되는 애노드 전극과,상기 애노드 전극의 일면에 소정의 패턴으로 형성되는 형광막과,화상이 구현되지 않는 비유효부의 상기 애노드 전극 위에 형성되는 절연막을 포함을 포함하고,상기 형광막 사이에는 블랙매트릭스막을 형성하고,상기 형광막과 블랙매트릭스막 위에 도전성 금속으로 형성하는 금속박막층을 포함하고,상기 절연막은 상기 금속박막층 위에 형성하는 전계 방출 표시장치.
- 청구항 1에 있어서,상기 절연막은 애노드 전극의 화상이 구현되지 않는 비유효부인 모서리부분부터 제2기판의 모서리부분까지 형성하는 전계 방출 표시장치.
