본 발명은, 재기록가능한 데이터 저장매체 상에 데이터를 저장하는 방법과, 저장매체와, 재기록가능한 데이터 저장매체 상에 데이터를 저장하는 기록장치와, 재기록가능한 데이터 저장매체 상에 저장된 사용자 데이터를 재생하는 재생장치에 관한 것이다.
본 발명은, 사용자가 저작권으로 보호를 받는 자료와 복제가 자유로운 자료를 저장할 수 있는 저장매체를 제시한다. 종종, 사용자는 콘텐트를 저장하고 복사할 수 있는 권한을 갖지만, 그 사용자가 만들 수 있는 복사본(의 생성)의 수에 대해서는 제한이 있다. 저작권으로 보호를 받는 콘텐트가 복제방지 법규를 준수하는 "호환(compliant)" 장치에 의해서만 해석될 수 있도록 보장하기 위해 암호화가 사용된다. 비호환 장치가 암호화된 데이터의 비트 단위의 복제를 할 수 있는 것을 방지하기 위해서는 추가적인 보호책이 필요하다. 예를 들면 암호해독 키와 같은 필수적인 정보를 복제가 불가능한 방식으로 저장함으로써, 이것이 종종 방지된다.

본 발명은, 주로, 고정된 데이터 영역에 저장된 데이터와 시스템 데이터 사이에 어떠한 암호적 관계가 존재한다는 착상에 근거를 두고 있다. 이와 같은 관계는, 본 발명에 따라, 시스템 데이터만으로부터, 또는 시스템 데이터와, 고정 데이터 영역에 저장된 난수일 수 있는 식별 데이터 모두로부터 발생된 암호 개요(cryptographic summary)로 구성된다. 이와 같은 암호 개요는, 저장매체의 복제 방지를 조작하기 위해, 시스템 데이터가 부정 변경되었는지, 예를 들면 소거되거나 변형되었는지 여부를 검출하기 위해, 기록 또는 재생장치에 의해 사용된다. 따라서, 이 암호 개요는 시스템 데이터의 검증을 위해 사용되는데, 이것은, 검증 실패의 경우에, 저장매체의 콘텐트의 재생 또는 기록이 중단될 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.
제 1 해결책에 따르면, 시스템 데이터는, 예를 들면 저장매체의 포맷화의 일부로서, 기록가능한 데이터 영역에 기록된다. 암호 개요, 예를 들면 암호 해시값(hash)이 시스템 데이터에 대해 계산되고, 이 암호 개요의 결과, 예를 들면 이 해시값의 결과가 고정 데이터 영역에 저장된다. 그후, 기록장치는, 시스템 데이터와 고정된 데이터의 유효한 조합, 즉 암호 개요를 갖는 저장매체만을 받아들인다.
또 다른 해결책에 따르면, 식별 데이터, 예를 들면 난수가 생성되어, 고정 데이터 영역에 저장된다. 이에 따라, 기록가능한 데이터는, 사용자 데이터, 시스템 데이터와, 시스템 데이터 및 식별 데이터의 암호 개요, 예를 들면 그것의 전자 서명을 포함하게 된다. 그후, 기록 또는 재생 장치는, 암호 개요, 즉 시스템 데이터와 식별 데이터의 유효성을 검사하기 위해 식별자(예를 들면, 공개 키)를 사용하는데, 즉 서명의 유효성이 검사된다. 전자서명을 사용하는 대신에, 검증을 위해 저렴하지만 덜 안전한 메시지 식별 코드(MAC)가 사용될 수 있다.

도 1은 본 발명의 제 1 실시예에 따라 재기록가능한 데이터 저장매체 상에 데이터를 저장하는 방법을 설명하는 도면이다. 예를 들면, DVD 또는 CD에 데이터를 광 기록하기 위한 디스크일 수 있는 저장매체(1)는, 판독전용 고정 데이터 영역(2)과 기록가능한 데이터 영역(3, 4)으로 분리되며, 이 기록가능한 데이터 영역은 시스템 데이터 영역(3)과 사용자 데이터 영역(4)으로 분할된다. 고정 데이터 영역에 저장된 데이터는 소비자가 변경할 수 없다. 고정 데이터 영역(2)의 일반적인 구현예는, 재기록가능한 디스크 내부에의 피트들의 프레싱, 즉 CD-ROM 또는 DVD-DOM 매체로서 사용되는 재기록가능한 디스크의 부분을 들 수 있다. 또 다른 구현예로는, BCA(Burst Cut Area), 즉 디스크 제작소에서 YAG 레이저에 의해 기록된 디스크의 내경 위치에 있는 바코드 패턴을 들 수 있다. 세 번째 구현예로는, 사전에 프레싱 된 피트들의 반경방향의 변위("피트-워블(pit-wobble)") 또는 예비홈의 반경방향의 변위("예비홈 워블(pre-groove wobble)")로 고정된 데이터를 저장하는 것을 들 수 있다.
기록가능한 데이터 영역(3, 4)에 저장된 데이터는 소비자가 변형할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 시스템 데이터 영역은, 서론부에서 개략적으로 설명한 것과 같이 복제방지 정보와 같은 시스템 데이터를 위해 예약되어 있다. 기록가능한 데이터 영역의 가장 큰 부분(4)은 사용자 데이터, 예를 들면 오디오 또는 비디오 데이터를 저장하는데 사용될 수 있다.
고정된 데이터 영역(2)의 용량이 제한되는 반면에, 점점 더 증가하는 양의 시스템 데이터가 저장되고 변형가능하지 않아야 하기 때문에, 본 발명은, 이 시스템 데이터를 기록가능한 데이터 영역 3에 저장하고, 이 시스템 데이터와 차후의 기록 또는 재생 중에 변형이 불가능한 고정된 데이터 영역(2)에 저장된 특수한 정보 사이에 암호 관계를 설정하는 것을 제안한다. 따라서, 본 실시예에 있어서는 시스템 데이터의 해시값을 계산하는 발생수단(5)에 의해 시스템 데이터의 암호 개요가 계산된다. 그후, 해시값의 암호학적으로 안전한 결과값은 고정 데이터 영역(2)에 저장된다.
도 1에서 설명한 방법은, 시스템 데이터와 암호 개요를 동일하거나 별개의 기록수단을 사용하여 비어 있는 기록매체에 저장하는 기록장치 상에서 구현하는 것이 바람직하다.
도 2에 도시된 것과 같은 재생장치에서는, 시스템 데이터 영역(3)에 저장된 시스템 데이터의 해시값이 재생장치에 포함된 유사한 발생수단(5)에 의해 계산된다. 이 계산 결과는, 매체(1)의 고정 데이터 영역(2)으로부터 판독된 암호 개요를 수신하는 재생장치 내부의 검증수단(6)으로 전달된다. 이와 같은 암호 개요가 해시 계산의 결과값과 동일하면, 검증이 성공적으로, 사용자 데이터의 재생이 중단되거나 진행될 수 있는 반면에, 검증 실패인 경우에는, 시스템 데이터가 조작되었을 가능성이 높기 때문에, 재생이 중단된다. 매체로부터 시스템 데이터와 암호 개요를 판독하는 판독수단은 도시되어 있지 않다.
실제적인 구현에서는, 매체(1)를 (최초에는 비어 있는) DVD-RAM 또는 CD-RW, 또는 이하에서는 '부적당한(naughty)' 레코더로 불리고, 시판이 되고 있으며, 디스크 제작소에서 이미 기록된 알려진 해적된 레코더의 일련번호 목록을 포함하는 여타의 재기록가능한 매체로서 생각할 수 있다. 이들 부적당한 레코더는 불법 복제에 관여된 것으로 알려져 있기 때문에, 이 목록은 DVD-RAM/CD-RW 또는 다른 매체의 정직한 재생장치가 이들 레코더의 기록물을 재생하는 것을 거부하는데 사용된다. 이와 같은 목록은 보통, 고정된 데이터 영역(일반적으로 수백 비트)에 저장하기에는 너무 길다(일반적으로 1 MB 이상). 따라서, 이 목록은 제작소에서 재기록가능한 매체 상에 정규 파일처럼 기록된다. 임의의 사용자가 이 목록을 소거하거나 변형하는 것을 방지하기 위해, 이 목록의 해시값이 계산된다. 이와 같은 해시값은 시스템 데이터에 비해 훨씬 짧으므로, 매체의 제조과정 동안 고정 데이터 영역에 쉽게 기록될 수 있다. 그후, 매체의 삽입시에, 정직한 재생장치는 먼저 시스템 데이터의 해시를 계산하고, 그 결과값을 고정 데이터 영역에 저장된 해시값과 대조한다. 이 들 값이 일치하지 않으면, 시스템 데이터가 부당 변경된 것이다.
이와 같은 기본적인 형태에서는, 암호 비밀값(예를 들면 암호 키)이 시스템 내부의 어느 곳에서도 사용될 필요가 없다. 그러나, 유연성이 부족하다는 문제점이 존재한다. 이것은, 재기록가능한 매체 상의 고정된 데이터 영역에 있는 실제의 비트 콘텐트가 제작소에서 디스크를 제조할 때에 영구적으로 고정된다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서, 디스크의 제작 이전에 보호되는 시스템 데이터의 해시값이 계산되어야 한다. 예를 들면, 추가적인 부적당한 레코더들을 목록에 추가함으로써, 시스템 데이터가 변경되면, 해시값도 반드시 변한다. 따라서, 오래된 매체가 새로운 시스템 데이터에 대한 정확한 해시값을 더 이상 갖지 않기 때문에, 새로운 매체가 제조사에 의해 제조되어야만 한다. 또한, 디스크의 제조와 해시값의 고정 후의 어느 시점에 시스템 데이터가 변경 또는 갱신되어야 하는 다른 이유도 존재한다.
도 3 및 도 4에 도시된 것과 같은 본 발명의 제 2 실시예에 있어서는 더 큰 유연성이 얻어진다. 본 실시예에 따르면, 식별 데이터, 예를 들면 난수가 매체의 제조 중에 고정 데이터 영역에 저장된다. 시스템 데이터 영역은, 실제 시스템 데이터를 위한 제 1 영역(31)과, 암호 개요를 저장하기 위한 제 2 영역(32)으로 분할된다. 이와 같은 암호 개요는, 발생수단(7)에서 계산된 공개 키 서명 알고리즘을 사용하여 발생된다. 이때, 발생수단(5)에 의해 처음에 해시 코딩되는 식별 데이터와 시스템 데이터의 디지털 서명은, 비밀 개인 키 Kprivate를 사용하여 계산된다. 이와 같은 계산은 다음과 같이 쓸 수 있다:

이때, ED는 여분의 데이터(= 암호 개요)를 의미하며, E는 공개 키 암호화를 의미한다. 그후, 계산된 디지털 서명은 제 2 시스템 데이터 영역(32)에 암호 개요로서 저장된다.
도 4에 도시된 것과 같은 재생장치 또는 기록장치에서는, 먼저 식별 데이터와 시스템 데이터에 대해 해시값을 계산한 후, 검증수단(8)에서 공개 키 서명 검증 알고리즘과 공개 키 Kpublic을 사용하여, 데이터 영역(32)에 저장된 서명의 유효성을 검사한다. 도 3에서 디지털 서명을 생성하는데 사용된 개인 키는 비밀로 유지되어야 하는 반면에, 공개 키는 도 3에서 설명한 것과 같은 암호화 단계에서는 쓸모가 없기 때문에, 도 4에 도시된 재생 또는 기록장치에서 검증을 위해 사용된 공개 키는 자유롭게 배포될 수 있다.
도 5 및 도 6을 참조하여 제 3 실시예를 설명한다. 제 2 실시예에서와 같이, 식별 데이터는 고정 데이터 영역(2)에 저장되고, 실제 시스템 데이터는 시스템 데이터 영역(31)에 저장된다. 암호화를 위해, 시스템 데이터 영역(32)에 저장될 암호 개요가, 메시지 인증 코드 알고리즘(MAC 알고리즘)과 비밀 MAC 키를 사용하여 식별 데이터와 시스템 데이터로부터 발생수단(9)에 의해 발생된다. 이와 같은 MAC 암호화는 간단히 다음과 같이 쓸 수 있다:

도 6에 도시된 것과 같은 기록 또는 재생장치에서는, 동일한 비밀 MAC 키를 사용하여 식별 데이터와 시스템 데이터로부터 메시지 인증 코드를 계산하기 위해, 대응하는 발생수단(9)이 설치된다. 검증하기 위해, 이와 같이 계산된 MAC는 검증수단(6)에서 시스템 데이터 영역(32)에 저장된 암호 개요(MAC)와 비교된다.
도 3 및 도 4에 도시된 제 2 실시예와 비교할 때, MAC을 사용하는 것은 공개 키 서명을 사용하는 것에 비해 덜 안전하다. MAC를 계산하는데 사용된 키는 시스템 내부의 모든 재생장치 내부에 존재하며, 어느 사용자가 임의의 한 개의 재생장치를 깨뜨려 열고 키를 취득하면, 이 사람은 앞으로 진행하여 시스템 데이터를 고정된 데이터 영역에 있는 MAC를 여전히 인증하는 다른 시스템 데이터로 교체할 수 있다. 이에 반해, 제 2 실시예에서의 공개 키 시스템에 있어서는, 비밀 개인 키가 암호화 과정에서 사용되는 한편, 공표된 공개 키가 검증을 위해 사용된다.
본 발명을 이용함으로써, 시스템 데이터가 조작되는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 특정한 데이터를 고정 데이터 영역에 저장함으로써, 불법 레코더가 오래된 유효한 시스템 데이터를 새로운 매체로 복사하는 것, 예를 들면 부적당한 레코더의 새로운 길이가 긴 목록을 오래된 짧은 목록으로 교체하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 시스템 데이터 그 자체가 기록가능한 데이터 영역에 저장되기 때문에, 고정된 데이터 영역의 제한된 용량과 관련된 문제가 해소된다.
일반적으로, 시스템 데이터는, 사용자가 접근불가능한 영역, 또는 디스크의 일반적인 목적, 즉 사용자 데이터 저장을 방해하지 않는 매체의 영역에 저장되거나 숨겨진다. DVD와 CD 매체에 대해서, 이와 같은 영역의 예로는 디스크의 소위 '리드인' 및 '리드아웃' 영역을 들 수 있다. 이하에서는, 이와 같은 영역을 총괄적으로 '코너 영역'으로 칭한다. 이것은, 사용자를 귀찮게 하지 않으며, 코너 영역이 매 우 빠르게 스탬핑될 수 있기 때문에, 일반적으로 제조과정을 훨씬 더 경제적으로 하는 이점을 갖는 반면에, 기록가능한 데이터가 정규 속도로 기록되어야만 한다. 일반적으로, 재생장치는 레코더에 비해 훨씬 더 저렴하고 간단하므로, 매체의 코너 영역에 있는 시스템 데이터를 판독하는 것은 레코더보다 재생장치에 대해 상대적으로 더 큰 부담이 된다. 따라서, 매체의 최초 사용시에, 레코더가 시스템 데이터를 판독하여, 그것의 정보를 기록가능한 데이터 영역에 있는 주 사용자 데이터 영역으로 복사하도록 하는 것이 이치에 맞는다. 그후, 재생장치는, 어떤 식으로도 판독할 수 있는 주 사용자 데이터 영역에 있는 시스템 데이터 정보를 찾을 수 있다. 문제는, 레코더가 시스템 데이터를 충실하게 복사할 수 없을 수 있기 때문에, 재생장치가 레코더를 신뢰할 수 없다는 것이다. 그러나, 본 발명의 제 1 실시예에 따라, 시스템 데이터의 해시값이 고정 데이터 영역에 저장되는 경우에는, 재생장치가, 주 사용자 데이터 영역에 있는 시스템 데이터 자체가 고정된 데이터 영역에 있는 해시값과 일치하는지를 검증할 수 있다. 따라서, 명백하게, 레코더는 고정된 데이터 영역을 조작할 수 없다.
이때, 본 발명의 발명내용을 재생장치를 참조하여 설명할 경우에는 언제나, 이 재생장치가 기록장치로 대체될 수 있다는 점에 주목하기 바란다. 이들 양자의 장치는, 매체로부터 또는 매체에 데이터를 판독 및/또는 기록하기 위한 적절한 판독 및/또는 기록수단을 구비할 수 있다. 더구나, 청구항에 기재된 것과 같은 저장매체, 기록장치와 재생장치는, 데이터를 저장하는 방법을 참조하여 위에서 설명하고 종속항에 기재된 것과 동일하거나 대응하는 방식으로 더욱 더 전개될 수 있다는 것은 자명하다.

    - 상기 코너 영역에 시스템 데이터를 저장하고, 상기 제1 데이터 영역에 상기 시스템 데이터의 암호 개요를 저장하기 위한 기록수단으로서, 상기 암호 개요가, 사용자 데이터의 판독, 기록 및 판독 또는 기록 전에 상기 시스템 데이터의 검증을 위해 제공되는 기록수단과,
    - 상기 시스템 데이터의 암호 개요를 생성하기 위한 생성수단(5)을 구비하는 것을 특징으로 하는 기록장치.
  28. 판독전용 고정 데이터 영역(2)을 구비하는 재기록가능한 데이터 저장매체(1) 상에 저장된 사용자 데이터를 재생하는 재생장치에 있어서,
    상기 판독 고정 데이터 영역은 제1 데이터 영역과 코너 영역을 포함하고, 상기 재생장치는,
    - 상기 코너 영역에 저장된 시스템 데이터를 판독하며, 상기 제1 데이터 영역(2)에 저장된 시스템 데이터의 암호 개요를 판독하는 판독수단과,
    - 상기 매체(1)로부터 판독된 시스템 데이터의 암호 개요를 생성하며, 상기 생성된 암호 개요를 이용해 상기 시스템 데이터를 검증하는 검증수단(5,6)을 구비하는 것을 특징으로 하는 재생장치.
  29. 제 14항 또는 제 28항에 있어서,
    상기 재기록가능한 데이터 저장 매체(1) 상에 상기 사용자 데이터를 기록하는 기록수단을 더 구비하는 것을 특징으로 하는 재생장치.
