인터넷 TV 시스템에서 시청율을 조사하는 방법 및 시스템에 관한 것이다.
나. 발명이 해결하고자 하는 기술적 과제
자동으로 시청율을 조사할 수 있는 시청율 조사방법 및 시스템을 제공한다.
다. 발명의 해결방법의 요지
TV 방송국에서 시청채널 검색명령을 TV 방송신호에 VBI 인코딩하여 방송하고, 인터넷 TV 수상기들 각각이 TV 방송신호를 수신하고 VBI 디코딩하여 시청채널 검색명령일 때 현재 선국채널을 확인하여 시청채널번호를 통지하는 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 작성하여 TV 방송국으로 전송하며, TV 방송국에서 인터넷 TV 수상기들로부터 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 수신하여 시청율을 확인한다.

Description

인터넷 텔레비젼을 이용한 시청율 조사방법 및 시스템{METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR SURVEYING PROGRAM PATING USING INTERNET TELEVISION}
본 발명은 텔레비젼(television: 이하 "TV"라 함) 방송 시스템에 관한 것으로, 특히 인터넷 TV 시스템에서 시청율을 조사하는 방법 및 시스템에 관한 것이다.
통상적으로 TV 방송국이나 시청율 조사기관에서는 특정 시간에 시청하고 있는 TV의 채널을 조사하여 TV 시청율 통계를 내고 있다. 이와 같이 시청율을 확인하기 위해서는 수동으로 각 가정에 전화를 걸어 시청채널을 조시하거나 제한된 샘플링(sampling) 집단으로부터 수동으로 데이터를 집계하여 왔었다.
이와 같이 시청율을 조사함에 따라 비용과 시간이 많이 소요되며 불성실한 응답으로 인해 정확도가 저하될 뿐만아니라 조사 시간간격도 제한되었었다.
상술한 바와 같이 종래에는 일일이 수동으로 시청율을 조사함에 따른 불편함이 있었으며 그에 따라 비용과 시간이 많이 소요되며 불성실한 응답으로 인해 정확도가 저하될 뿐만아니라 조사 시간간격도 제한되는 단점이 있었다.
따라서 본 발명의 목적은 자동으로 시청율을 조사할 수 있는 시청율 조사방법 및 시스템을 제공함에 있다.

상술한 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명은 TV 방송국에서 시청채널 검색명령을 TV 방송신호에 VBI(Vertical Blanking Interval) 인코딩(encoding)하여 방송하고, 인터넷 TV 수상기들 각각이 TV 방송신호를 수신하고 VBI 디코딩(decoding)하여 시청채널 검색명령일 때 현재 선국채널을 확인하여 시청채널번호를 통지하는 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 작성하여 TV 방송국으로 전송하며, TV 방송국에서 인터넷 TV 수상기들로부터 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 수신하여 시청율을 확인함을 특징으로 한다.
이하 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 첨부한 도면을 참조하여 상세히 설명한다. 하기 설명 및 첨부 도면에서 구체적인 처리흐름과 같은 많은 특정 상세들이 본 발명의 보다 전반적인 이해를 제공하기 위해 나타나 있다. 이들 특정 상세들없이 본 발명이 실시될 수 있다는 것은 이 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에게 자명할 것이다. 그리고 본 발명의 요지를 불필요하게 흐릴 수 있는 공지 기능 및 구성에 대한 상세한 설명은 생략한다.
우선 본 발명은 TV 방송신호의 VBI를 이용하여 시청채널 검색명령을 방송함으로써 인터넷 TV 수상기들에게 현재 선국된 채널을 확인하여 시청채널번호를 통지하기를 요구한다. 그러면 인터넷 TV 수상기는 TV 방송신호를 수신하고 VBI 디코딩하여 시청채널 검색명령일 때 현재 선국채널을 확인하여 시청채널번호를 통지하는 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 작성하여 TV 방송국으로 전송한다. 그러므로 TV 방송국에서는 인터넷 TV 수상기들로부터 이와 같이 수신되는 시청채널 통지 전자우편으로부터 시청율을 확인할 수 있게 된다. 여기서 TV 방송신호의 VBI 부분에 제한된 양의 데이터를 인코딩하여 삽입한후 방송하고 수신측에서 이를 수신하여 디코딩함으로써 추출해내는 기술은 공지된 기술이다.
도 1은 이를 위한 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 인터넷 TV 시스템 구성도를 보인 것으로, TV 방송국(100)과 인터넷 TV 수상기(102)가 공중전화망(도시하지 않았음)의 전화선(128)을 통해 연결된다. 상기 TV 방송국(100)과 인터넷 TV 수상기(102)에서 본 발명과 직접적으로 관련이 없는 통상적인 구성은 도시하지 않고 생략하였다. 또한 예를들어 1개의 TV 방송국(100)과 1개의 인터넷 TV 수상기(102)를 보였으나, 실제에 있어서는 TV 방송국은 2개이상이 될 수 있으며 인터넷 TV 수상기는 더욱 많은 수가 될 것이다.
상기 TV 방송국(100)은 콘트롤러(controller)(104)와 VBI 인코더(106)와 방송 송신기(108)와 모뎀(MODEM: Modulator-Demodulator)(110)을 구비한다. 콘트롤러(104)는 TV 방송국(100)의 주제어장치로서 본 발명에 따라 시청채널 검색명령을 VBI 인코더(106)에 인가하여 방송하며, 그에 응답하여 모뎀(110)을 통해 수신되는 시청채널 통지 전자우편들로부터 시청율을 확인한다. VBI 인코더(106)는 콘트롤러(104)로부터 인가되는 시청채널 검색명령을 TV 방송신호에 VBI 인코딩하여 방송 송신기(108)로 출력한다. 방송 송신기(108)는 VBI 인코더(106)로부터 입력되는 TV 방송신호를 통상적인 TV 방송시와 마찬가지로 변조하여 안테나를 통해 송신한다.
도 2는 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 상기한 방송국(100)의 콘트롤러(104)의 처리흐름도를 보인 것이다. 도 2를 참조하면, 콘트롤러(104)는 도 2의 (200)단계에서 VBI 인코더(106)로 시청채널 검색명령을 전송한다. 이때 콘트롤러(104)는 운용자에 의해 미리 설정된 조사 시간간격마다 또는 운용자의 키입력에 의해 상기 (200)단계를 수행한다. 이에따라 시청채널 검색명령이 VBI 인코더(106)에 의해 VBI 인코딩되어 TV 방송신호에 삽입되고 방송 송신기(108)를 거쳐 안테나를 통해 송신된다. 이후 콘트롤러(104)는 (202)단계를 수행한다.
한편 인터넷 TV 수상기(102)는 방송 수신부(112)와 VBI 디코더(114)와 TV 마이컴(MICOM: Microcomputer)(116)과 인터넷 모듈(module)(118)을 구비한다. 상기 방송 수신부(112)는 안테나를 통해 TV 방송신호를 수신하여 채널 선국 및 복조한다. 이러한 방송 수신부(112)의 출력신호는 통상적인 경우와 마찬가지로 신호 처리된후 도시하지 않은 수상관과 스피커를 통해 영상 및 음성으로 출력됨과 아울러 VBI 디코더(114)에 인가된다. VBI 디코더(114)는 방송 수신부(114)로부터 입력되는 신호를 VBI 디코딩하여 TV 방송신호에 삽입된 데이터를 추출한다. 이때 VBI 디코딩된 데이터가 상기한 바와 같은 시청채널 검색명령인 경우 TV 마이컴(116)으로 출력한다. TV 마이컴(116)은 통상적인 경우와 마찬가지로 인터넷 TV 수상기(102)의 각 부분을 제어하여 TV 기능을 수행함과 아울러 인터넷 모듈(118)에 의한 인터넷 검색에 따른 화면을 디스플레이한다. 이러한 통상적인 기능이외에 TV 마이컴(116)은 본 발명에 따라 시청채널 통지기능을 수행한다.
도 3은 이러한 TV 마이컴(116)의 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 처리흐름도를 보인 것이다. 도 3을 참조하면, TV 마이컴(116)은 도 3의 (300)단계에서 시청채널 검색명령이 VBI 디코더(114)로부터 인가되는 것에 응답하여 (302)단계를 수행한다. 상기 (302)단계에서 TV 마이컴(116)은 현재 튜너(도시하지 않았음)에 의해 현재 선국된 채널을 확인하고, (304)단계에서 시청채널번호와 시청채널 통지명령을 인터넷 모듈(120)의 CPU(Central Processing Unit)(120)로 전송하고 종료한다. 상기 시청채널번호는 현재 선국된 채널, 즉 현재 시청하고 있는 채널번호이고, 시청채널 통지명령은 이러한 시청채널번호를 TV 방송국(100)로 통지할 것으로 요구하는 명령이다.
상기 인터넷 모듈(118)은 CPU(120)와 메모리(122)와 모뎀(124)을 구비하며, CPU(120)와 메모리(122)와 모뎀(124)은 버스(126)를 통해 연결되고, 모뎀(124)은 전화선(128)을 통해 TV 방송국(100)에 연결된다. 상기 CPU(120)는 TV 마이컴(116)과 통신을 하며 모뎀(124)을 통한 인터넷 검색 기능을 수행한다. 메모리(122)는 CPU(120)의 동작 프로그램 및 각종 참조 데이터를 저장하고 있으며, 전자우편의 데이터와 같이 CPU(120)의 프로그램 수행에 따른 데이터를 일시 저장한다. 모뎀(124)은 CPU(120)의 제어에 따라 TV 방송국(100)로 전화를 걸고, 전화선(128)을 통한 송수신신호를 변복조한다.
도 4는 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 상기 도 1의 인터넷 모듈(118)의 CPU(120)의 처리흐름도를 보인 것이다. 상기 도 4를 참조하면, 도 4의 (400)단계에서 TV 마이컴(116)으로부터 시청채널 검색명령이 수신되는 것에 응답하여 (402)단계를 수행한다. 상기 (402)단계에서 CPU(120)는 현재 시청채널을 통지하는 전자우편을 작성하여 (404)단계에서 모뎀(124)을 통해 TV 방송국(100)으로 전송하고 종료한다. 이때 시청채널 통지 전자우편은 도 5에 보인 바와 같이 인터넷 TV 수상기(102) 사용자의 전자우편 주소와 해당 TV 방송국(100)의 수신인 전자우편 주소를 포함하며, 제목에 기재된 "9"는 시청채널 통지 전자우편임을 나타내고, 내용에 시청채널번호를 포함한다. 이러한 전자우편 자동 송수신 프로그램은 현재에도 많이 쓰이고 있는 기법이다.
한편 TV 방송국(100)의 콘트롤러(104)는 상기한 (202)단계에서 인터넷 TV 수상기(102)를 포함한 인터넷 TV 수상기들로부터 상기한 바와 같이 전송되는 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 모뎀(110)을 통해 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 수신한다. 이후 콘트롤러(104)는 (204)단계에서 이들을 집계하여 시청율을 계산하고 종료한다. 이때 시청율은 해당 TV 방송국(100) 채널번호를 시청채널번호로 입력된 전자우편 수를 총 수신한 전자우편 수로 나누면 된다.
따라서 TV 방송국에서는 자동으로 시청율을 조사할 수 있으며 그에 따라 비용과 시간이 많이 감소되고 정확도가 향상될 뿐만아니라 조사 시간간격도 보다 세분화가 가능하게 된다. 예를들어 조사 시간간격은 10분단위로도 가능하다.
한편 상술한 본 발명의 설명에서는 구체적인 실시예에 관해 설명하였으나, 여러가지 변형이 본 발명의 범위에서 벗어나지 않고 실시할 수 있다. 특히 본 발명의 실시예에서는 TV 방송신호를 무선으로 송신하는 통상적인 TV 방송국의 예를 보였으나, 케이블 TV 방송국도 될 수 있다. 따라서 발명의 범위는 설명된 실시예에 의하여 정할 것이 아니고 특허청구범위와 특허청구범위의 균등한 것에 의해 정하여져야 한다.
상술한 바와 같이 본 발명은 인터넷 TV를 이용하여 자동으로 시청율을 조사할 수 있으며 그에 따라 비용과 시간이 많이 감소되고 정확도가 향상될 뿐만아니라 조사 시간간격도 보다 세분화가 가능한 잇점이 있다.

Claims (5)

  1. 인터넷 TV 시스템에 있어서,
    TV 방송국에서 시청채널 검색명령을 TV 방송신호에 VBI 인코딩하여 방송하는 과정과,
    인터넷 TV 수상기들 각각이 상기 TV 방송신호를 수신하고 VBI 디코딩하여 상기 시청채널 검색명령일 때 현재 선국채널을 확인하여 시청채널번호를 통지하는 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 작성하여 상기 TV 방송국으로 전송하는 과정과,
    상기 TV 방송국에서 상기 인터넷 TV 수상기들로부터 상기 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 수신하여 시청율을 확인하는 과정을 구비함을 특징으로 하는 인터넷 TV를 이용한 시청율 조사방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 시청채널 통지 전자우편이, 상기 인터넷 TV 수상기 사용자의 전자우편 주소와 해당 TV 방송국의 수신인 전자우편 주소와 상기 시청채널번호를 포함함을 특징으로 하는 인터넷 TV를 이용한 시청율 조사방법.
  3. 인터넷 TV 시스템에 있어서,
    시청채널 검색명령을 TV 방송신호에 VBI 인코딩하여 방송한후 그에 응답하여 수신되는 시청채널 통지 전자우편들로부터 시청율을 확인하는 TV 방송국과,
    상기 TV 방송신호를 수신하고 VBI 디코딩하여 상기 시청채널 검색명령일 때 현재 선국채널을 확인하여 시청채널번호를 통지하는 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 작성하여 상기 TV 방송국으로 전송하는 인터넷 TV 수상기를 구비함을 특징으로 하는 인터넷 TV를 이용한 시청율 조사시스템.
  4. 제3항에 있어서, 상기 시청채널 통지 전자우편이, 상기 인터넷 TV 수상기 사용자의 전자우편 주소와 해당 방송국의 수신인 전자우편 주소와 상기 시청채널번호를 포함함을 특징으로 하는 인터넷 TV를 이용한 시청율 조사시스템.
  5. VBI 인코딩에 의해 TV 방송신호에 삽입된 데이터를 VBI 디코딩하여 추출하는 VBI 디코더를 구비하며, 인터넷 접속이 가능한 인터넷 TV 수상기에 있어서,
    TV 방송국으로부터 수신되는 TV 방송신호를 VBI 디코딩하여 시청채널 검색명령이면 현재 선국채널을 확인하는 과정과,
    상기 확인된 선국 채널번호인 시청채널번호를 통지하는 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 작성하는 과정과,
    상기 시청채널 통지 전자우편을 상기 TV 방송국으로 전송하는 과정을 구비함을 특징으로 하는 방법.
