Abstract

PURPOSE: Shock absorbing structure of a bumper is provided to reduce impact transmitted from a bumper stay to a side member, and to prevent a vehicle body from being deformed by absorbing the shock finally with a reinforcement member at a collision. CONSTITUTION: A bumper assembly is composed of an energy absorber(22) assembled with a bumper cover(21); a steel bumper beam(23) combined with the energy absorber; and bumper stays(24a,24b) fixed in both sides of the steel bumper beam. Incision units are formed in both sides of the steel bumper beam, and reinforcing members(25a,25b) having hexagonal sections are inserted to incision units of the steel bumper beam. The reinforcing members are exposed out of the incision units, and fixed in the bumper stays. The bumper stay is fixed in the end of a side member placed in the lower part of an engine room. The impact is absorbed by the energy absorber, and is dispersed in the steel bumper beam to concentrate on the reinforcing members in applying the shock of 5MPH to the bumper cover. The weak impact is transmitted to the bumper stays and the side member by absorbing the shock with crushing the reinforcing members.
