Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for various liquid crystal high polymer or developer for heat-sensitive recording paper, by reacting phenol with carbon dioxide in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as an additive. CONSTITUTION:Phenol is reacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of 1,8- diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (hereinafter abbreviated to DBU), as necessary, in a polar aprotic solvent, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, at 20-300 deg.C under 0-100 kg/cm<2>G pressure to afford the aimed substance. The reaction is carried out by using the DBU in an amount of 0.1-10mol. based on 1mol. phenol and the carbon dioxide in an amount of 0.1-10mol. based on 1mol. phenol.
