Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composite material outstanding in metal strength and heat resistance, useful for the machines, equipment etc. for use in mines, ironmaking activities etc., by packing the holes of a metallic substrate with each specific metal powder and wear-resistant ceramics followed by heating in e.g. a vacuum. CONSTITUTION:First, a metallic substrate made of e.g. high-chromium cast iron is provided with holes 10 with circular section of desired size in desired intervals to prepare a thick plate 11. Small quantities of self-fusible metallic powder such as of Zn or Pb is then put into the above holes 10 followed by charging these holes with surface-metallized wear-resistant cylindrical ceramics 13 (e.g. Al2O3, ZrO2, SiC, Si3N4) whose outer diameter is smaller than the inner diameter of said holes 10 by 1-2mm. Thence, the same kind of metallic powder as the above 12 is put again into the gap between said holes 10 and the ceramics 13 followed by mounting a weight 14 thereon and heating in an oven under a vacuum at 900-1,200 deg.C to effect melting of the metallic powder 12, followed by cooling to solidify said metallic powder, thus obtaining the objective composite material with the ceramics 13 embedded and set in the thick plate 11.
