Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sintered body with increased resistance to crack propagation leading to higher toughness against fracture, by sintering a formed body prepared by mixing silicon carbide powder with both carbon and boron as the sintering aid and fibrous silicon carbide followed by forming. CONSTITUTION:The objective sintered body can be obtained by sintering a formed body prepared through homogeneously mixing (A) 54-93wt.% of silicon carbide powder, (B) 0.1-3.0wt.% on a boron basis, of either boron or boron- contg. compound, (C) 0.4-3.0wt.% on a carbon basis, of either carbon or carbon- contg. compound and (D) 5-40wt.% of silicon carbide whisker or silicon carbide fiber either in a vacuum of <=10<-3>mmHg or inert gas atmosphere under a pressure of 1atm.
