Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the title high-density sicon nitride member having high strength and an excellent surface property by exerting a high gaseous nitrogen pressure on a silicon nitride sintered body sintered to higher than a specified density at a prescribed temp. in the presence of a metal selected from Cr, Mo, and W to density the sintered body. CONSTITUTION:A silicon nitride sintered body sintered to >=95% relative density is arranged in the atmosphere wherein at least one kind of metal (e.g., foil and crucible) selected from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten is present. A gaseous nitrogen pressure at >=300kgf/cm<2> is exerted on the sintered body at >=1,600 deg.C to density the body, and a high-density silicon nitride member is obtained. By this method, since molybdenum, tungsten or chromium are present as the carbon adsorbent, the silicon nitride sintered body can be densitied without infiltration of carbon into the body, and a highly homogeneous silicon nitride member can be obtained.
