Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title silicon nitride sintered body having excellent flexual strength, breaking toughness, hardness, etc., by mixing prescribed Si3N4 whiskers, high-alpha rate Si3N4 fine powder, and sintering assistant powder, forming the mixture, and press-sintering the formed product in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:(A) From 5-40wt.% silicon nitride whiskers having >=0.5mum minor axis and >=5mum length, (B) the silicon nitride powder having <=1mum mean particle diameter and wherein alpha-Si3N4/(alpha-Si3N4+beta-Si3N4) is controlled to >=90wt.%, and (C) sintering assistant powder (e.g., Y2O3) are mixed. The mixed powder is formed, and then press-sintered in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to obtain a whisker-reinforced silicon nitride sintered body wherein alpha-Si3N4/(alpha-Si3 N4+beta-Si3N4)>=20%. The obtained silicon nitride sintered body is appropriately used for an automobile engine members, cutting tools, etc.
